My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

"Hello, I'm Frontier! I'm just a kitten, but I already have a big personality. I was rescued from the side of the highway where I looked for shelter in the engine of a Nissan Frontier. That's how I got my name! I'm the sweetest Tortie you'll ever meet, even though we're known to be sassy. I just like to tell you how I feel and remind you when I want to play. I'm still curious, despite my scary experience on the road. I think it's made me appreciate life more. For instance, I love a good cuddle, snuggling up close to you and purring away. If you adopt me, you'll never have another boring day, and I promise to fill your home with love and lots of fun!"

We have a $95 adoption fee for cats and dogs that covers shots, testing, health checks and age-appropriate spay or neuter. All cats and dogs are micro chipped; dogs are on heartworm preventative.

Our adopters must be 21, have ID and must undergo an interview, fill out an application and sign contracts related to commitments for the care of the animals. We will check veterinary references and landlord information.

No animals may be adopted as gifts and and all members of the caretaking family must be in agreement about the adoption.

Should an adoption not work out we require the animal to be returned to Friends For Life.

We are currently located in the Historic Heights. Our shelter looks more like a gallery than a shelter! Incredible photography is displayed in our lobby. Care has been taken with every detail of the building. We are bringing in 100% outside fresh air and turning over the air in each space completely 15 times an hour. We have made certain that sunlight reaches every animal (and staff) workspace and even engaged a professional acoustician from the beginning to ensure that we manage the sound for everyone's comfort. We have cageless cat rooms with 19-foot ceilings and climbers everywhere to keep the kitties happy and healthy. We have a 'real life' dog living area set up for the dogs. Our shelter is unlike any you've ever experienced! You have to see it to believe it!

We need adoption counselors, docents and animal "smoochers" to keep everyone feeling loved. We also need, welcome and swoon over our foster parents!

Our volunteers and foster parents are like gold to us. Please consider joining this energetic and positive group! If you'd like to volunteer, please just email us below or drop by!

Come by and visit! Even if you are not adopting an animal, we have well-trained staff to answer pet related questions, a wealth of training, medical and behavioral information and a fun atmosphere to just drop in and get your fix of animal love!

As always, Friends For Life is a No Kill organization.

More about this shelter

WHO ARE WE?
We are located in Houston and are the only LEED-certified green No Kill animal shelter in Texas. We incorporated as a 501(c)3 no kill organization in 2002. Friends For Life was started with the purpose of providing the animals of Houston and surrounding areas with immediate alternatives to the killing and a long term plan to change the direction of the sheltering community to a more compassionate future. Our ranks are made up of veterinarians, architects, business people, lawyers, physicians and animal care specialists all passionately dedicated to ending the killing of homeless animals.

WHY DOES OUR ANIMAL COMMUNITY NEED FRIENDS FOR LIFE?

At 80,000 annually, Houston has the tragic distinction of being the city that kills the most animals in its shelters second only to San Antonio. Some of the reasons Houston shelters kill animals is that they are a certain breed (pit bulls, rottweilers, chow chows, etc.), weigh under 2 lbs, sneeze on intake, are over 7 years old, are missing some hair or are pit bull puppies. 75% of the animals we adopt into loving homes have been previously rejected by other organizations as 'unadoptable.'Friends For Life is taking meaningful steps toward reversing this tragic situation by redefining 'adoptable' every day and finding homes for animals who otherwise have no hope. At Friends For Life, EVERY ANIMAL MATTERS.

EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL ADOPTION PROGRAM

Limited only by space, we will accept any animal needing our assistance regardless of age, condition or breed. They include beautiful cats, dogs, puppies and kittens. All are fully vet-checked, tested and have received all age-appropriate vaccinations and spay/neuter surgery.

We have training consults and discounted training services available for all FFL animals.

HOW CAN YOU BE A PART OF CHANGING THE FUTURE?
1. Take a look at out website at www.nokill1.org and consider volunteering. Many of our volunteers have been with us for years and have traveled from as far away as Georgia and Indiana to volunteer for FFL projects. Trust us, it's a good gig!

Sign up online at www.nokill1.org/how-to-help/volunteer or just stop by and see us!

2. Adopt an FFL animal in need. The truth is, 'unadoptable' is what we make it. Every animal adopted from a no kill program sends a powerful message that this is the direction we want to see our shelters take. Every life has value. Together, we can chage everything!
