My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Walter

*Taking applications only*

Walter is up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, neutered and crate trained. He is also litterbox trained and nearly house broken when no litterbox is present.

Walter is a 1yr old 16lb bundle of energy and love. He has been through training and has many many commands under his belt. He loves dog sports and wants nothing more to either be doing something or to be the center of attention. He loves all animals but doesn't necessarily need them to be happy. The exception is rodents/small animals he loves to hunt those. He is a confident, outgoing, and smart little dog. He even helps with training other dogs! Walter's owner wants to find him a family that can give him everything they cannot, due to current circumstances. A fence is required and an in person or video tour of the fence will be required. He is an escape artist, this comes with being wicked smart. He also knows that a human cannot catch him. His recall is wonderful if you work with him. If you don't he assumes he can ignore you.

*This dog is a Benefactor Dog. His/her increased adoption fee will allow them to act as a benefactor to other dogs in our care that require special medical care and a give them a better chance at adoption.

More about this rescue

What is APAWS?
A.P.A.W.S (Animal Protection and Welfare Society) is a volunteer, foster-based, no-kill, 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue organization based out of Baton Rouge, LA.

What does this mean? APAWS has no paid board members or staff. We do not have a brick and mortar location. We are supported by generous and loving volunteers who agree to shelter and care for the animals as a temporary placement until the animals find their forever homes.

Our Misson
Since 2004, APAWS has been dedicated to ensuring that all pet animals in and around the Baton Rouge area live in homes that provide for all of the animal’s physical and emotional needs (including love, compassion, daily care and medical care) for the animal’s lifetime. We do understand that things may not always go as planned. APAWS will always provide a safety net for the pets that we adopt out- should something ever happen and they need our assistance again. All animals in our care will be spayed / neutered and up to date on age appropriate vaccinations before adoptions are finalized.

Our Vison
Our main goal has always been to break the stigma around rescue animals and reduce the number of animals that are euthanized in local shelters by proving that you can rescue wonderful dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments. Through our work with both animals and humans, APAWS strives to make Southeast Louisiana a more inclusive environment where everyone can experience the transformative benefits of responsible, humane pet ownership.
