My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Introducing ✨ Mabel ✨
Name origin: Latin fr. amabilis: lovable; dear
Mabel is true to her namesake. Just shy of 5 months old, she is a true velcro baby that loves to be near. She is a smart girl that is very treat/food motivated. Still shy and timid in new places, she is working on building confidence and will need a calm presence that uses positive and rewarding training techniques. She was in a small, rural shelter as wee one and so does have some anxiety that stems from a stressful situation. Despite her rough beginnings, she is progressing so beautifully!
Mabel knows her name and will make eye contact with its use. She has perfected "sit" and even knows without prompt to sit at the proper times. She is doing great with practicing to "settle" or wait before digging into her meals, and with going out an open door and waiting for the "okay" to go. She is crate trained. She is working on potty training and on leash manners. She has picked up quite quickly on the daily flow and this sweet girl has no real interest in going on a walk when she knows that couch snuggles come after the walk. Exercise is totally overrated for this kiddo. Lots of chew toys and stuffies are a necessity for this teething girl. She does great with other dogs (but still needs learning on proper introductions and dog manners). She is being fostered with two confident and non fearful cats. Mabel is respectful when the cats are giving a boundary but is excited when they want to play.

If you think Mabel might be the perfect addition to your family, please fill out an adoption application here. Adopt Mabel and let the adventures begin!  Mabel is currently being fostered in North Carolina and can transport along the East Coast as far North as Maine to her adoptive home.

More about this rescue

Underhound Railroad was formed in 2009 by a group of friends, with the goal of rescuing innocent dogs from death row in Connecticut shelters. Underhound Railroad has now grown to include rescue communities in Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, North Carolina, South Carolina and Utah.

With our focus on rural areas where shelters are overflowing with abandoned dogs waiting to find rescue, our network of Underhound volunteers work hard to prevent undeserved deaths, see that medical, emotional and behavioral needs are tended to, and transportation as well as a loving foster family are provided to the pups on their journey to finding their forever homes!
