My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ruby is lucky to be alive... she was surrendered at a local vet after showing up extremely emaciated, not eating, and severely malnourished. There's no telling how long she'd be suffering or how long her condition had been allowed to progress to get to the point of being life-threatening, but instead of euthanizing her, the amazing veterinary team reached out to Animalluvr's Dream Rescue to take over her care while they started the complicated process of discovering just what was wrong with Ruby and causing her such distress. After hospitalization and multiple tests, Ruby was found to have an inguinal hernia that was completely strangulating her uterus, obstructing her bowels, and causing parts of it to be necrotic. She required an emergency surgery to resect parts of her intestines and remove the affected tissues. She is yet another victim of the "fluffy Frenchie trend - people crossbreeding and inbreeding for looks at the expense of dogs' health. Ruby faced several infections and complications while she recovered, but we're happy to share that she's now healthy, fully vetted, has gained the weight she needed, and is now ready for her forever home. Although she is not currently on any medications, considering the breed and the medical issues she has already faced, she will need a special home that can afford and is prepared to face any additional medical issues she will likely face as a result of her genetics. That said, we know she will get many applications and interest, but we will be selective on finding the perfect home for her. Ruby is only 3 years old and still very much a puppy. She LOVES to play fetch with balls and stuffed animals. She bonds very deeply with her person once she's comfortable and has become quite attached to her foster mom. She gets along great with the other large dogs in her foster home, and is incredibly gentle and loving with younger children she's been living with. She does display some food aggression so feeding her separately from other dogs is best. She does well in a crate during feedings and at night, after getting adjusted to her routine. She does display some separation anxiety when her family leaves so an apartment probably wouldn't be the best setting for her, unless she's not left alone a lot. She walks fine on a leash and doesn't require a fenced yard, as long as she's able to play fetch in the house. She loves to sleep in a cozy dog bed and roll over at your feet for belly rubs. She has not been cat tested yet, or been around dogs that are her size or smaller than her. She's a total love bug and will make a great addition to a family with kids, other dogs, or someone that just wants a snuggle buddy and best friend.

More about this rescue

Hi, my name is Cecilia Nieves. I am a certified veterinary technician @ Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Services as well as a full time mother. For about a decade now, I have been well involved in the veterinary field and for more than half of those years been actively involved in rescue work as well. I have worked with all kinds of pets and wildlife to even working as a Zookeeper @ Busch Gardens-Tampa.

Our name, AnimalLuvr’s Dream Rescue, comes with a bit of history as well. My mother and I moved to Florida when I was 12yrs old. My wonderful friend, Jenna, helped me create my very first email address. Always knowing I wanted to be in the veterinary field, I searched for animal lover and it had already been taken. Trying to be creative, I spelled it AnimalLuvr and from then on this became my logo and nickname. Being that this is my dream of having a rescue it is pretty self-explanatory.

In 2009 I began working hands on with both domestic and wildlife rescues that arrived to our emergency service in very critical conditions and this quickly made me realize that not only are there a lot of animals out there that need our help but a lot of them are strays that no one claims, confiscated animals and those that the owner either cannot or will not give them the care they need. The Tampa bay and surrounding areas are very lucky to have a hospital like Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Services that opens its doors to those unclaimed animals and care for them when no one else will. I am more than honored to say that Dr. Katy Meyer is not only supportive of my mission and goals but will be assisting us as being one of our wonderful board members!

June 2014 – After a year and a half of lots of invested $, tons of paperwork, calling the IRS at least monthly to follow up and patiently waiting – WE HAVE OFFICIALLY RECEIVED OUR APPROVAL LETTER FOR OUR 501c3 TAX EXEMPTION!!
