Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Mercury came into rescue after being in two homes. His first home was where he mainly grew up but the family had a disabled son and were no longer able to care for both. A friend of theirs took Mercury in but she was also dealing with a family member who had major health issues and she felt that she really needed to focus on him at this time so she asked if we could take Mercury and find him a stable home. Mercury is 5 years old and is a toy poodle. He seems to love women but does not seem to like men, at all. He becomes aggressive around males so a home with only females is needed or very patient and understanding males who are willing to win him over and deal with his behavior before they do. For this reason, we do not recommend a home with children. He has responded well to my older grandchildren (ages 14 and 11), especially my granddaughter but he can be snippy so keep that in mind if you have children/grandchildren. We really do not know why he prefers females. It's possible that he may have been abused by a male at some point in his life or just that he was raised with a woman and see men as threats or it maybe even just his own personal preference. Whatever the case, his ideal home is with a female. Mercury seems to get along well with other small dogs. We have not tried him with larger dogs because of his attitude. We don't believe that the big guys would take kindly to it. We were told he doesn't do well with cats, birds or chickens either, according to his 2nd home. Mercury will bark quite a lot when he isn't with you and it takes a bit to settle him down but we are working on that.
Now that we have all of the potentially "dings" out of the way, the positives about Mercury are that he is super sweet with those he likes and trusts. He is pretty much a velcro dog who loves snuggling and being with you! Mercury is cute as a button and you can't help but fall in love with him. He is crate trained and housebroken, if you take him out as needed. His 2nd home stated he did very well with going outside. E never guarantee housebroken though as we always expect any adopter to work with their dog, if needed. He's leash trained and would really be a great addition to a woman who lives alone and wants a companion who enjoys being their constant companion. We feel like Mercury would not bark as often if he had the one on one time that he craves. He enjoys being spoiled and doted on. Mercury LOVES playing ball which could make him a fun, entertaining buddy.
Mercury saw the vet on 10/23/24 and was found to have no issues on his exam. He also tested negative on his heartworm test and on his fecal. Mercury weighed 6.8 pounds as of 10/23/24.
If interested in giving Mercury his forever home, please submit your interest and your adoption application via email or text ONLY to 352-215-3260 (phone calls will not be answered or returned from this number). Mercury's adoption fee will be $400 to help cover the cost of his vetting and daily care while with us. We will only consider applicants who complete the adoption application and will determine whether the applicant would be a good fit for Mercury based on the info provided in the application. If we feel that you will be a good match for him, we will set up a meet and greet appointment with you.
* NOTE-Mercury will be neutered on 10/30/24 and can go home anytime after that date.
