Additional adoption info

Falling in love with a pet is easy and pet ownership is very rewarding. Adopting a pet, however, is a big decision. Dogs, cats, and other furry friends require a lot of time, money, and commitment. Our experienced adoption counselors will gladly help you find an animal that's likely to be a good fit for your lifestyle and living arrangements.

At our shelter, all dogs must be escorted out on a leash and collar. For smaller dogs, a carrier or crate may be used instead. All cats require a secure carrier for their journey home. Should you find yourself without the necessary supplies at the time of adoption, we offer a selection of basic items available for purchase right here at the shelter.

Our adoption process is designed to be thorough yet efficient. It includes an essential meeting with the animal you are interested in adopting. If the animal is prepared to join a new home, you may be able to complete the adoption on the same day. Please note, the process can take up to an hour or longer, particularly if there are specific medical preparations needed for your new pet. We aim to facilitate immediate placements into loving homes, and as such, we no longer offer holds on animals ready to leave the same day.

Included in the Adoption Fee:
The adoption fee covers the cost of spaying or neutering your pet, micro-chipping, annual vaccinations, and a rabies vaccination. For residents of Sarasota County, there is an additional $13 fee for a rabies tag and registration.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to ensure a smooth and successful adoption for each animal and their new family. Thank you for supporting our mission and choosing to adopt.

More about this shelter

The Humane Society of Sarasota County (HSSC) is dedicated to the health and welfare of each animal in our care. As the area's premier no-kill shelter, our mission is to engage the hearts, hands, and minds of the community to help animals. We strive to provide compassionate care to our shelter pets, find them permanent homes, and promote responsible pet ownership. Our vision is a community where all animals are cared for and loved, a goal we pursue with unwavering commitment. Through our values of compassion, commitment, and responsibility, we endeavor to create an environment where the welfare of animals is a shared community priority.

Our Animal Clinic focuses on wellness, offering services such as vaccinations and routine check-ups. However, it is not a full-service veterinary practice and does not provide emergency medical care. Owners are encouraged to seek emergency and specialized services from other veterinary providers as needed.

In addition to our adoption services, HSSC offers a variety of programs designed to enhance the human-animal bond. These include pet therapy programs for children, seniors, and individuals with special needs, as well as basic obedience classes for dogs. We also provide numerous volunteer opportunities, allowing community members to engage with dogs, cats, and other areas of our shelter.

We are the area’s largest no-kill animal shelter, operating without city, state, or federal funding, and are not funded by any national humane organization. HSSC relies solely on private donations, bequests, and grants to continue our vital work. To learn more about how you can support our mission or contribute, please visit our donation page at https://www.hssc.org/give/donate.
