Athena is a charming compact little gal. She can be shy at first until you give her a few scratches and then-let the butt wiggling begin!! She will curl all around to try to get more attention from you. She is opening up more every day. She came to us from an unfortunate situation. She has lost her hooman family, her roommate and bff and finds herself in a smaller bungalow. She was a little irked when she arrived, but her resilient spirit is guiding her to move onward and upward. She is a lovely volunteer favorite already. Come and check her out! She will benefit from some obedience training and will gain confidence with structure and boundaries. Go slow is the name of game with this beautiful girl. She's been on a roller coaster and is looking for stability in her next relationship. Please consider adding this sweet and bubbly gal to your life if you can give her a wonderful journey and help her be her best self. She has been around other dogs, but slow introductions and feeding in separate locations will be the keys to success in her new home. Potential new doggy bffs will need to be interviewed to determine compatibility.

Adoption fee includes basic vaccinations, worming, flea treatment, feline-leukemia/FIV test, heartworm test, spay/neuter (done prior to leaving), rabies vaccination and a microchip
There is a contract and all potential adopters meet with adoption counselor to talk about application and make sure pet is good fit with the person and family. A "meet and greet" is required with all family members and the pet prior to finalizing the adoption application. If someone is adopting a dog and has another dog at home, we also require a "meet and greet" for the dogs as well. All animals in the home must be up to date on vaccinations prior to new pet going home. We do not adopt to people who will keep the pet outside exclusively. We may do a home visit either pre or post-adoption. Animals adopted from us are not be sold or given to another person. We verify all information on the adoption application and may deny an application with any false information on it. A follow up call or visit is done on all adoptions within first 30 days of adoption.

Our adoption fees are as follows:
Puppy (0-12 months): $200
Adult Dog (1-5 years): $175
Senior Dog (6+ years): $85
Senior to Senior Program: any person over 65 yrs of age wanting to adopt any pet over 7 yrs of age: adoption fee is waived

The Humane Society of Wicomico County was started in 1968 by a group of people who wanted to help improve the lives of animals. We have come a long way in our 40+ years! We have a staff dedicated to making sure the animals that come to our doors are loved and protected as they wait for their forever home. Not only are our animals vaccinated, wormed and given flea preventative, we can treat animals that come to us with mange, ringworm, heartworm and pay for animals to be seen by an outside vet should there be a need. We have an on-site spay/neuter clinic that not only is used for our animals but we also offer low cost spay/neuter for animals of the public. We provide emergency boarding for victims of domestic abuse, fire, and medical emergencies. We also have the capability to set up an off-site emergency shelter for people evacuated from their homes. In addition, we have an education program to help teach kids about being a responsible pet guardian. We work with a wide range of rescue groups and our animals have been transported from our mid-Atlantic area throughout the North Eastern United States. Our shelter is an open admission shelter and we will take in approximately 3500 animals this year. We do what we do because of our love for animals and our desire to make a difference in their lives every single day.
