My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Gumby!
This sweet boy was found in a field all by himself.
We imagine he was wondering - what just happened here?
Although a bit on the thin side, he was in pretty good condition and he had a beautiful coat.
He was obviously loved and well cared for at one point in his young life.
We are determined to find him a family that will give him forever love and spoil him.
We can go on and on about all the wonderful qualities this wonderful boy has...
but you really really need to meet him! He loves everyone and everyone here adores him.
All the volunteers race to be first in line to walk him. He will have you wrapped around his paw in no time.

A "meet and greet" is required with all family members and the pet prior to finalizing the adoption application. If someone is adopting a dog and has another dog at home, we also require a "meet and greet" for the dogs as well. All animals in the home must be up to date on vaccinations prior to new pet going home. We do not adopt to people who will keep the pet outside exclusively. We may do a home visit either pre or post-adoption. Animals adopted from us are not be sold or given to another person. We verify all information on the adoption application and may deny an application with any false information on it. A follow up call or visit is done on all adoptions within first 30 days of adoption.

More about this shelter

The Humane Society of Wicomico County was started in 1968 by a group of people who wanted to help improve the lives of animals. We have come a long way in our 40+ years! We have a staff dedicated to making sure the animals that come to our doors are loved and protected as they wait for their forever home. Not only are our animals vaccinated, wormed and given flea preventative, we can treat animals that come to us with mange, ringworm, heartworm and pay for animals to be seen by an outside vet should there be a need. We have an on-site spay/neuter clinic that not only is used for our animals but we also offer low cost spay/neuter for animals of the public. We provide emergency boarding for victims of domestic abuse, fire, and medical emergencies. We also have the capability to set up an off-site emergency shelter for people evacuated from their homes. In addition, we have an education program to help teach kids about being a responsible pet guardian. We work with a wide range of rescue groups and our animals have been transported from our mid-Atlantic area throughout the North Eastern United States. Our shelter is an open admission shelter and we will take in approximately 3500 animals this year. We do what we do because of our love for animals and our desire to make a difference in their lives every single day.
