My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello! My name is Katara!

I am a silly, fun girl who enjoys playing with toys and running around. I, unfortunately, didn`t have all of the important experiences puppies are supposed to have in their first weeks and months of life, so I`m a pretty nervous gal. But I`m learning that the world is a pretty cool place with nice people who come with fun toys and tasty treats.

I`m looking to join a home that is familiar with my Akita breed, has the time, energy and patience for a puppy, and also some extra capacity to help me make up for lost time with my socialization. Given how well timid pups can learn from confident, easy-going dogs, my GHS friends are hoping to find me a home with a well-socialized dog so they can help show me the world is a safe place!

MY IDEAL HOME INVOLVES…
CHILDREN: Teenagers should be ok. Given how nervous I can be, I wouldn’t be ideal for a home with young children.
OTHER DOGS: YES, a home with a well-socialized adult dog is PREFERRED to help me learn, through them, that the world is not so scary.
CATS: Potentially, with a cat confident around dogs.
FIRST-TIME DOG OWNERS: No, I would do best with someone who has previous dog experience.
FENCED-IN YARD: Recommended.
HOUSING ENVIRONMENT: No apartment buildings, as I can be nervous of new and unfamiliar things, including strangers and too many doorways.
SOMEONE HOME MOST OF THE DAY: Not necessarily but I wouldn’t be ideal for a home where I’m alone a full workday.
SOME OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ME…
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Medium-high.
HOUSE-TRAINED: Not yet as I’m still young. But with a consistent routine and frequent outings, I will get there in no time!

Our building is small but mighty. Our staff have introduced creative ways to continue our important work while maintaining appropriate social distancing in accordance with Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph (WDG) Public Health standards as a result of COVID-19.

At this time, we are unable to welcome more people into the building outside our staffing needs. We unfortunately cannot properly socially distance with a higher building occupancy. We thank you for your understanding and support.

More about this shelter

For 125 years, the Guelph Humane Society has been dedicated to protecting and caring for the many animals with whom we share our community and our lives, and to fostering the important bonds with animals that enrich us as individuals, families and communities. Founded in 1893, the Guelph Humane Society provides care and shelter for approximately 3,000 homeless, stray, injured, orphaned, abandoned and abused animals each year, throughout Guelph and Wellington County.

Our programs are delivered by an enthusiastic team of staff with many years of experience in animal care and welfare. In addition to paid staff, we are lucky to have nearly 300 active volunteers, who provide thousands of hours of service each year and generously share their skills and ideas with the humane society.

The Guelph Humane Society has a strong working relationship with local, provincial, and national animal welfare organizations; local school boards; the City of Guelph; Township of Centre Wellington; Township of Guelph-Eramosa; local veterinarians; the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre at the University of Guelph; and Guelph Police Services and the Provincial Crown Attorney’s Office. We are an affiliate society of the Ontario SPCA, and proud member of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS).

Our organization is guided by a Board of Directors made up of volunteers with a wide range of skills and business experience. The Board also convenes several ad hoc committees, which work to address specific issues. Day-to-day operations of the shelter are managed by the Executive Director and senior staff with the Board’s general guidance.

We are a registered charitable, non-profit organization that does not receive government funding. As such, we depend on your donations and private funding to support our important work. The Guelph Humane Society charitable registration number is 119236305RR0001.
