Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Rusty is a thoughtful, structured dog who has learned to navigate the world carefully. He forms strong bonds with people he knows and trusts and has shown himself to be affectionate and loyal with familiar handlers. Once that relationship is built, Rusty enjoys connection and often greets his favorite people with a soft toy or towel in his mouth.
Rusty can be wary of unfamiliar people, particularly men, and does best with calm, confident handlers who understand how to build trust gradually. With time and consistency, he has shown he can expand his circle and form new positive relationships, especially when introductions are done thoughtfully.
Rusty is no longer interested in interacting with other dogs and can react when they are too close. He is best suited for a single-dog home. With experienced handling, he has made progress learning to pass other dogs at a distance and can be redirected when given space. Continued work on neutral, low-pressure exposure will help him maintain these skills.
Rusty is sensitive to loud noises and fast-moving stimuli such as vehicles or bikes and may react out of fear. He benefits from structure, predictable routines, and handlers who recognize when he needs support. He generally treats his toys gently, and changes in this behavior can be a sign that he is feeling stressed.
Rusty has luxating patellas, a common orthopedic condition that may cause some discomfort or mobility changes as he ages. We are happy to provide more information and discuss what this could mean for him long-term.
Rusty is looking for an experienced, patient adopter who values routine, clear communication, and relationship-building. In a stable, understanding home—one that respects his boundaries and continues his training—Rusty has the potential to be a deeply loyal and meaningful companion.

VOLUNTEER JOB OPPORTUNITIES
KITTY CUDDLERS – This program was designed to ensure that every cat gets one-on-one attention every day. The volunteer interested in this role needs to be very comfortable with all breeds of cats, and be willing to go home full of cat hair and pulls in their clothing. They need to be able to assess animal body language and behavior. There is a short training that will be scheduled and we utilize Kitty Cuddler Volunteers 6 days a week from 10 am to 5 pm.
CANINE COMPANIONS – This program was designed to ensure that every dog gets one-on-one attention every day. This is our most physically demanding volunteer position; the volunteer interested in this role needs to be physically fit, very comfortable with all breeds and all sizes of dogs and willing to go home full of dog hair, dog slobber and exhausted. They need to be able to assess animal body language and behavior. There is a short training that will be scheduled and we utilize Canine Companion volunteers 6 days a week from 10 am – 5 pm.
FOSTER CARE PROGRAMS
MEDICAL FOSTERS - Some animals at the Shelter have special medical needs that need attending after recuperating from surgery or due to cruelty issues. Foster parents receive special instructions from our Clinic to help care for these special needs animals.
PUPPY/KITTEN FOSTERS – We need foster parents who are willing to take these little babies in and take care of them until they are big enough to come back to the Shelter and be put up for adoption. This is usually any where from a 2 week to potentially a 2 month commitment.
