Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Birdie is an 11-month-old Shepherd mix and is 45 pounds of pure joy. Her big, soulful eyes will instantly melt your heart. She is incredibly smart, picking up on training commands faster than you can get another treat out of the bag. Speaking of treats…she is highly food motivated and very eager to please, which means as long as you have a little something on hand, she’ll do just about anything!
Birdie loves a good mix of play and relaxation – you get the best of both worlds with her. She gets a short walk every day, along with a couple of rounds of zoomies during playtime. If fetch is your game, Birdie is your girl! Her eyes light up when you pick up any of her favorite toys, and she’s halfway across the yard before it’s even left your hand. She’s still working on the “bring it back” part, but hey, nobody’s perfect right?
While Birdie has the sweetest playful energy, outside of playtime she is a full couch potato. Her favorite thing is laying right next to you, watching TV for as long as you’ll let her. Birdie is at her happiest when she is with her people. Whether that’s tagging along on adventures or snoozing at your feet after a day of fun, she enjoys every moment.
Birdie is both house trained and crate trained. When she came to us she was quite nervous about crate time, her previous situation left her with some separation anxiety. However, after a few weeks of building trust, she has grown much more confident! She’s almost excited about her crate now, especially knowing that crate time = the good treats. She does take a little time to warm up to new spaces, and appreciates some reassurance in order to know she’s landed somewhere safe. Because of this, Birdie would do well with a family who is committed to making her feel extra comfortable and confident while she transitions into her forever home.
She would love a home with a fenced yard, however with regular exercise she would be okay without one. While she may cry when she initially goes into her crate, she is not particularly vocal and could be in a home with shared walls. Birdie loves everybody she meets, human or animal. She is wonderful with other dogs and also loved the company of the cat friend she met.
If you are looking for a loving, loyal companion who will bring endless joy and affection into your life, Birdie is your perfect fit. She is the best friend you could hope for and the perfect addition to any home!

The adoption fee is $450. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.
Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.
Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer
How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.
Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.
Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.
We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.
We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
