My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

LizBeth is an absolute sweetheart who loves to follow you around and snuggle by your side. She can be a little shy but she has come out of her shell significantly. Once she warms up to you, you will have a new best friend! She can be spunky and playful while also sweet and cuddly. She has recently taken an interest in playing with toys and it has been a joy to watch her play!

She is mostly house trained (on a schedule). She may have a little accident but usually it's when we miss a cue, we are still working on that. Most of the time she likes to lay by the door to signal to go out. She knows how to sit on command, especially for a treat. She's very curious and smart. She loves puzzle and treat toys to keep her occupied! She will play on her own with toys or with our resident dog. She loves to lay and look out the patio. She does well on walks and doesn't pull on the leash (unless she gets scared and wants to go home which isn't often). She loves to explore and we have taken her on trails and walks and she is interested in the adventure. A home with a yard fenced or not fenced would be great for her.

She's getting used to her kennel and will go in for a treat and let you close the door. She may whine at times but settles down. She gets anxious if she's in her kennel or confined to a room and you leave the room/house. We have been working with her on trusting we will return. She sleeps well in her kennel if it's in the same room with you at night - she settles in and is quiet through the night. She has also slept well out of the kennel.

She does have separation anxiety and prefers to know you're near and may bark or whine when alone. She has made great progress but for this reason she will do best in a home, not an apartment, where she will not be left alone often.  She's not quite used to car rides and may get car sick or anxious (she drools only in the car because of her anxiousness). We have been working on that with her with treats and short car trips to a park for positive experiences.

She will be a great companion to someone who isn't gone for long periods of time, who has experience with dogs, willing to work on her training, and who can give her belly rubs all day long!

Unknown with cats, will need slow introductions with other dogs. Some larger dogs have scared her so a home with either no dogs or a gentle dog would be best. She does enjoy playing with our resident dog, just took sometime to warm up. She has walked up to strangers and a calm child and been fine but slow intros are a must as she warms up to her environment.

An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal.  Please check out our website, www.ruffstartrescue.org for more details and additional pictures on any of our animals! All Ruff Start dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccines, microchipped, dewormed, and on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention (dogs) as well as heartworm tested (dogs). Ruff Start Rescue is a foster based rescue. Animals are located in homes throughout Minnesota. We do not have a facility where animals are kept. Go meet their pets

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based rescue, meaning no animals are available at the Princeton, MN office for public viewing or adoption. All animals in our care reside in foster homes with few special exceptions for our adoption center animals, who are housed at our partnering facilities temporarily before adoption. To meet a Ruff Starter you may be interested in adopting, please submit an adoption application on our website.

More about this rescue

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit companion animal rescue that primarily serves communities throughout the state of Minnesota, as well as states in the south with severe pet overpopulation. We rescue stray, neglected, abandoned, and surrendered dogs and cats as well as ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other critters. Most of our work is accomplished by a complex network of volunteers, fosters, and supporters, all of whom come together to save thousands of animals each year.

Since our inception, we’ve firmly believed that a home is usually a far more desirable environment than a shelter or a kennel for most companion animals in need of a forever family. As a result, we rely nearly exclusively on volunteers to provide foster homes for rescued pets until they find their adoptive homes. Please note: this means no animals are available at our facility for public viewing.

Each pet in our care is provided with routine vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures, microchipped, given internal and external parasite preventatives, and tested for common bloodborne pathogens such as heartworm and feline leukemia. Advanced veterinary care is provided to any animal that requires such services before adoption.

If you are interested in fostering, adopting, or volunteering, please fill out an applicable application at our website: www.ruffstartrescue.org.
