My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Oh, hello. Rex here. Since you're reading this, you're obviously looking for a new best friend - and, hey, so am I! Let me tell you a little bit more about me. In addition to my classic dog name, I have plenty of classic doggo personality. I absolutely adore chewing on big stick toys, especially when I can lean on your legs and have you give me side rubs. When it's hot outside, I enjoy a nice soak in a mini swimming pool, especially with a stick toy (have I mentioned sticks?). I'm not just a man of leisure, though - I'm a smart gentleman, too. I know sit and shake, and I've lived in harmony with small dogs, cats and toddlers before. If all that sounds up your alley - and you have access to stick toys - come meet me today!

A team member adds, "After his walk when I sat down criss cross in his room to take off his harness, he immediately gently climbed into my lap and calmly lied down He's a big guy but clearly is very comfortable as a lap dog!"

Adoptions are completed on a first come, first served basis. Please note there may be a wait to meet with a pet, dependent on advisor availability.

Please allow plenty of time to meet your perfect pet. Once you have selected a pet, the adoption process will take at least 30 minutes. We do not begin the adoption process after 5:30 pm.

Animal Humane New Mexico performs a background check on all adopters & does not adopt to anyone who has committed a violent crime. We reserve the right to refuse an adoption for any reason.

Please note, visitors must wear their mask indoors at all Animal Humane locations.

More about this shelter

Founded in 1965, Animal Humane New Mexico is the state’s leading private 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization serving more than 10,000 homeless and at-risk dogs & cats each year. We never euthanize based on age or length of stay and since 2010, have re-homed 100% of healthy pets in our care. We support every companion animal at Animal Humane with outstanding veterinary, social and emotional care, and love.

As a private nonprofit shelter, we receive no city, state or federal funding; each dollar judiciously spent is earned or raised. We are nationally recognized as a top U.S. charity based on financial accountability, transparency, and administrative-to-program cost ratios.
