My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Hazel, a 5-year-old Dutch Shepherd-mix who is as charming as she is resilient. While we don’t know much about her past, she was surrendered at a Texas shelter in July and was brought to Michigan on a "Freedom Flight" by MAD in October

Why Hazel is the Perfect Companion:

  • Affectionate and Friendly: Hazel adores people and thrives on attention, loving belly rubs, ear scratches, and being close to her person.

  • Easygoing and Gentle: Hazel has a low-medium energy level and a calm, gentle disposition, being more on submissive end of spectrum. She takes treats gently and handles vet visits like a pro, even staying relaxed during nail trims despite having the quick nicked on a nail and bleeding everywhere! Hazel’s not overly motivated by treats or toys yet, but she’s just beginning to settle in, and she might show interest in them over time.

  • Quick Learner: She’s (re)learning how to wait patiently for her leash, doors, and meals and responds well to guidance. She’s a quick study and responds well to guidance, especially on walks (sometimes forgetting her person is on the other end of the leash but redirects easily).

  • Good with Other Dogs: Hazel has done well with dogs at the shelter and is warming up to her new dog companion, showing she can adapt well to a multi-pet home. She will be meeting cats soon and no issues are expected.

  • Unique Charm: Hazel has an old pelvic fracture that is fully healed. Due to her old injury, she has a slightly shifted tail and fabulous butt wiggle when she’s excited – it’s sure to make you smile!

Challenges to Consider:

  • Medical Needs: Hazel will be undergoing heartworm treatment over the next few months and will be spayed before joining her forever family. In addition to the old pelvic fracture, she has a chipped canine tooth, but they don’t seem to cause her discomfort but are things to be aware of.

  • Uncertain Around Children: While Hazel is great with adults, she hasn’t been around small children or adolescents, so her adaptability there is unknown.

  • Adjusting to Routines and Car Rides: Hazel is still learning some basic manners and will need ongoing help getting comfortable in cars.

We will continue to update her profile over the next few months as we learn more. However, if you're looking for a calm, loving companion with an adorable wiggle, get your application to MAD in - Hazel is ready to join your home!

All MAD dogs come with a Fi Collar and one-year subscription.
