My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

Ellowise is a lover by nature. She would thrive in a home with lots of human attention and in a home where someone is home most of the time. She’d also love to join you always on any adventures. Ello is quiet in her crate, when needed. She will slowly crawl on her belly at night to get closer and closer to the pillow as though she thinks you won't notice-it's seriously the cutest! Ellowise CANNOT GET ENOUGH cuddle time!!! At night she cuddles with her 6 year old foster human and gets as close to his pillow as possible. She is a gentle soul who wants nothing but love and to give love in return.

Ellowise is an incredible companion who thrives with someone who can be by her side for most of the day. She cannot live in a kennel or be left alone for long stretches, as this is too difficult for her. Ideally, Ellowise needs a home where her new family has experience with dogs, isn't working full-time outside the home, and can spend quality time with her. She does best in environments where kenneling is minimal (under 4 hours), and if necessary, done with medication.

Ellowise can sit next to her 6 year old foster human while he eats chicken nuggets and not once will she try to take the food. She is polite when taking treats from kids, great with dogs of all sizes from 9 lbs to 55 lbs, and loves to explore outside. She is smart too-knows shake (with both paws) and will sit on command. Here’s a video of Ello sitting nicely for a treat with her foster sibling.

Ellowise enjoys car rides and sits patiently when you put her harness off and on. When you are driving in the car, if she is sitting in the back seat she will put her head on the center console and look up at you with those gorgeous eyes of hers begging to sit in the front but politely just watches you as you drive along.

You may notice the gentle leader around her mouth in some of the photos. It helps her walking as efficiently as possible and is not a negative reflection of her amazing demeanor.

It melts my heart her ability to forget that humans abandoned her and that she was a stray. Being impounded so long she never once forgot that she loves humans and shows that in her foster home constantly. She wants to please you and works hard at being the best behaved girl. Since her bath, her coat is shiny and the way it reflects the sunlight is absolutely stunning.

Ellowise is a joy to have in foster and a true gem of a girl that shows the undying love that dogs have for their humans in their lives. One look into Ellowise's eyes will tell you the boundless energy and adoration she has for you and her want to please you makes her the most wonderful family member. Ellowise is happiest when she's included in daily activities—whether that's accompanying her person to work, running errands, or just hanging out at home. If you're looking for a loyal companion and have the time and experience she needs, she'd love to meet you!

Ellowise is from a local impound. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract.

Go meet their pets

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based rescue, meaning no animals are available at the Princeton, MN office for public viewing or adoption. All animals in our care reside in foster homes with few special exceptions for our adoption center animals, who are housed at our partnering facilities temporarily before adoption. To meet a Ruff Starter you may be interested in adopting, please submit an adoption application on our website.

More about this rescue

Ruff Start Rescue is a foster-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit companion animal rescue that primarily serves communities throughout the state of Minnesota, as well as states in the south with severe pet overpopulation. We rescue stray, neglected, abandoned, and surrendered dogs and cats as well as ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other critters. Most of our work is accomplished by a complex network of volunteers, fosters, and supporters, all of whom come together to save thousands of animals each year.

Since our inception, we’ve firmly believed that a home is usually a far more desirable environment than a shelter or a kennel for most companion animals in need of a forever family. As a result, we rely nearly exclusively on volunteers to provide foster homes for rescued pets until they find their adoptive homes. Please note: this means no animals are available at our facility for public viewing.

Each pet in our care is provided with routine vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures, microchipped, given internal and external parasite preventatives, and tested for common bloodborne pathogens such as heartworm and feline leukemia. Advanced veterinary care is provided to any animal that requires such services before adoption.

If you are interested in fostering, adopting, or volunteering, please fill out an applicable application at our website: www.ruffstartrescue.org.
