Animal Profile: Nelson is a 28lb hunky little short stack that was labeled a 'Shiba Inu' mix. While his parentage may raise questions, we can tell you that he has an awesome personality and a winning grin.Nelson was found wandering as a stray, and wound up in the shelter in early September. No one came to claim him, and he's been waiting for someone to come whisk him away ever since. Nelson stole the heart of our rescue partner, and lucky for him those stubby little legs are hitching a ride to the PNW! We can't wait to meet him.
Foster Update: Nelson is an outgoing and friendly young herding dog mix who loves his people. He thoroughly enjoys playing fetch, chasing toys and playing tug-of-war - Nelson does not want you to hand him a toy, he wants you to play with him and the toy. He’s also an affectionate dog who likes to cuddle. He’ll happily roll over for belly rubs or ask for neck scratches.
Nelson is a smart cookie - he’s picking up on commands and boundaries quickly. He does well in his crate, sleeps through the night and has not had any accidents in the house. We’re currently working on not rushing out of the crate, waiting calmly for treats, not jumping on people, and just calmly existing when we’re not playing or out and about. Nelson should continue to use a crate in his home (at least when left alone) because he is a young dog and he’s still learning that not everything is a chew toy.
Nelson is dog-friendly and has done well with all the dogs he’s met. He’s playful and jumps when meeting other dogs, so it’s important that intros to any existing dogs in the home are done slowly as to not overwhelm the other dog. He’s currently learning some boundaries with our resident dogs. We believe Nelson would do well in a home with or without another dog.
Nelson has been cat-tested with dog-savvy cats and though there was no aggression shown, his herding instincts kicked in and he wanted to chase them. Because of this, I would not place Nelson in a home with cats.
Nelson is a wonderful dog that will make an excellent companion for a loving family!
