My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Well, Aloha, lovely humans! I’m Bartholomew, but you can call me “Hunky Hound Doggie” because let’s be real, I’m so handsome I could give the sunset a run for its money! At just 1 year old, I’m a super friendly and lovable guy who thinks he’s a lap dog, even though I’ve got the heart of a true adventurer. If you’re looking for a furry friend who’ll steal your heart and your spot on the couch, I’m your pup! I walk like a pro on a leash—practically a doggie runway model! I love everyone I meet, from the mailman to that cute tourist who just can’t resist my charm. I’m on the hunt for a forever family to take me on adventures and end the day with cuddles that are as warm as a Hawaiian sunset. So why adopt this hunk of a dog? Because life is better with a handsome sidekick by your side, and I’m ready to bring all the aloha into your life! Whether you’re looking for on-island adoption or a trip to the mainland, I’m packed and ready to go! Let’s make every day an adventure filled with love, laughter, and maybe a few treats along the way. Come meet me, and let’s get this party started! Schedule a meet and greet today or walk in anytime from 12 pm - 4 pm except for Thursdays.

More about this shelter

The Kauai Humane Society was established by the community in 1952 as a local non-profit 501(c)(3) organization to protect Kauai’s animals. We opened our current home just west of Lihue in 2001 thanks to the generous support of many individuals, families, businesses and foundations. We are an independent animal welfare organization and not a chapter of any mainland or Hawaii group.

The Kauai Humane Society(KHS) is the only physical animal shelter in Kauai County, Hawaii. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a government contract to allow KHS to provide services to Kauai County for humane field services for cats and dogs.

Our facility does not turn away any sick or injured cat or dog found on Kauai. We strive to not euthanize any healthy, adoptable, and/or treatable animals for space or treatable medical reasons.

In 2022, for the year overall, KHS achieved a Live Release Rate of 94.4%; meaning 94.4% of the animals that came into KHS during 2022 were released with a positive outcome of being adopted, returned to the owner, or transferred to a rescue group.
