My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!

Are you an active home looking for a sweet pup to walk and play with? If so, read about beautiful Gracie!

Gracie is a one year old, 12 pound Shih Tzu. She is spayed and healthy as can be! Because she is a puppy, she is all play and full of energy. She is still learning how to be a well-mannered dog, but she is a fast learner and eager to please. As with any puppy, we strongly recommend taking her to a behavior training class. She is well socialized and gets along with other dogs and people, although she can be shy at first.

Gracie is accustomed to 3-4 walks a day, and lots of playing fetch with her toys and balls. She is not yet at an age where she is content to just “be”, so her owners must to have the time to interact with her and keep her entertained. If left alone for long periods of time, she will find things to get into and chew on them! She is given a soft Kong now with a few treats inside and that keeps her busy for a while. Her foster mom calls her a little scamp because she is so delightful and such a happy girl!

At night she is a calm sleeper right next to you in bed, and during her “down” times during the day she loves to curl up next to your lap. She is quite a cuddler once she gets to know you. Gracie is a good eater and is very food motivated, so you need to really be aware of limiting the quantity and variety of her treats. Gracie also is really good in the car, so she would be a good traveler and you can include her in most of your daily activities and excursions.

In summary, Gracie is a very loving, sweet, adorable girl who needs a home where the owners can interact and spend a lot of time engaging her energy and curious nature. She cannot be left alone more than 4 hours a day even if there is another dog in the home, and needs a walk and about 30 minutes of playtime every 4 hours. She does get anxious without her person/people, so it would be best if there is someone who is home most of the day with her. Another small, playful, well-mannered dog as a companion and a role model would be very helpful to her.

The following are requirements for Gracie’s new home:

· Because Shih Tzus often live 16+ years, applications will only be considered from age appropriate individuals who will be able to provide the care and activity necessary for the rest of Gracie’s life.

· Due to Gracie’s high energy level and some separation anxiety, she must have a family who is home much of the time or can come home every 4 hours to give her a long walk and play with her for at least 30 minutes each time.

· Another well-mannered, small dog of equal energy level in the house would be a plus, but not an absolute, to help her with the separation anxiety and her need for playful canine interaction.

· Her new family must be active, but their activity should include Gracie, and something she enjoys! A lot of people running in and out raises her stress level.

· An adults only home would be best, but a home which includes children over the age of ten will be considered, based upon their previous experience with small dogs.

· Her family must commit to keeping her on a housetraining schedule (at least every 4 hours.

· Continue basic and socialization training (she already knows “sit” and “wait” and a little “come”!), but structured training classes would be ideal.

· Must live within 45 miles of Bloomington, MN.

· Willing to keep in touch and follow-up with the foster parent, and especially to attend the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September every year.

Gracie is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Her adoption fee is $420.00 plus $35.81 sales tax for a total of $455.81.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The first part of the adoption process is to submit an APPLICATION FOR ADOPTION online at www.shihtzurescuemn.org.

Once you have completed and submitted the application, it will be reviewed by an application committee who will decide if it is an appropriate application for one of our Shih Tzus or for a particular dog in which you are interested.

The application gives us an idea of your living situation, your family, your lifestyle, and what you are really looking for in a companion. As everyone knows, the requirements and expectations for dogs all vary, and like humans, each one has its own character and personality. With regards to dogs, some are mellow and just need a place where they can be a companion to people and relax and live out their lives. Others are more active or like the companionship of another dog. But they all need to be in homes where they are understood and loved unconditionally.

After reviewing the adoption application, an adoption coordinator will call for a phone interview to chat further about the dog and you. Upon completion of the phone interview we check your references to make sure that you are, in fact, who you represent yourself to be as both a person and prospective dog parent.

The next step is to verify your living situation. Once again, all dogs have different requirements, an example being that some dogs really need to go to homes where a fenced yard is available, whereas others are fine without a fenced yard. We also need to make sure that you are the owner of the home that you reside in, and if you are not, then we need to get consent from your landlord that the dog you are looking to adopt will be allowed in your home.

Finally, we will do a visit to your home, where all family members must be present, and you will get to meet the dog you are considering. Hopefully the visit will tell us that this is the match we hope it will be! At that point, if it is true love, then you may welcome your fantastic new Shih Tzu into your home for the beginning of what we are certain will be a wonderful, loving forever relationship. Please understand that it is the decision of the foster parent as to whether the family, home and dog are an appropriate match.

We require that you sign our adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee for the dog. All dogs adopted from us are fully vetted (vaccinated, heartworm tested, dewormed (if necessary), and spayed/neutered). The adoption fee is based on the age of the dog and ranges from $100 to $400.
