My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Howdy, friends, I'm Walter. Perhaps you were expecting a senior gentleman with a bow tie and pipe with a name like that? Well, I'm still a young guy and it's still to be determined if I'm a distinguished scholar ... but the name must be working for me, because my friends here at Animal Humane are always telling me how much they love me. It could be my adorable face (seriously, scroll through to my last photo here), or the full body snuggles I give, or what a good boy I am walking on my leash. I'm very affectionate (except with cats - it's just my nature to herd them and tell them what to do), and I'm a good listener. If we sound like a good match, don't wait - come meet me today!

A team member says, "Walter is the sweetest guy - always affectionate and happy to see you right from the start. He's easy to harness and leash and get out of his kennel for a walk. He enjoys running around the park and can entertain himself, but if you call him, he'll immediately come over and flop onto you for scritches and attention."

Adoptions are completed on a first come, first served basis. Please note there may be a wait to meet with a pet, dependent on advisor availability.

Please allow plenty of time to meet your perfect pet. Once you have selected a pet, the adoption process will take at least 30 minutes. We do not begin the adoption process after 5:30 pm.

More about this shelter

Founded in 1965, Animal Humane New Mexico is the state’s leading private 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization serving more than 10,000 homeless and at-risk dogs & cats each year. We never euthanize based on age or length of stay and since 2010, have re-homed 100% of healthy pets in our care. We support every companion animal at Animal Humane with outstanding veterinary, social and emotional care, and love.

As a private nonprofit shelter, we receive no city, state or federal funding; each dollar judiciously spent is earned or raised. We are nationally recognized as a top U.S. charity based on financial accountability, transparency, and administrative-to-program cost ratios. Animal Humane is among only 9 percent of nationwide charities to have received five consecutive annual four-star evaluations, the highest possible, from Charity Navigator, including a top score of 100 for accountability and transparency.
