My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Clobeara, the cutest little bear! Clo is a very scared lady who was picked up as a stray and brought in to ACCT Philly. She is currently rescue only due to fearful behavior. Clobeara started out very tense at the shelter but her behavior has been improving each day! She is starting to show a more goofy personality and allowing handling.

If your rescue can help her, please reach out to lifesaving@acctphilly.org!

Behavior:
Per Staff 10/11/24:
Clobeara used to be reactive in kennel, but now she is so shut down she just lays on her bed and trembles. Someone told me that yesterday she was even peeing herself in fear when people approached her kennel, poor baby. I visited her kennel a couple times throughout the day with a breakfast sandwich and some hash browns. When I first offered them she stayed curled up on her bed and watched me with semi hard eyes, not even getting up to sniff the food. I left, and when I came back she had eaten the food, so I offered her some more. She ate the food when I would turn my head away, and even got brave enough to take a couple pieces from my hand! When I came back by her kennel for enrichment she greeted me at the door with semi soft eyes and some mid level wags.Clobeara got out for some one on one time today. I visited her kennel throughout the day with high value food, trying to win her over. When I came back to take her out she was curled up on her bed with big, sad eyes, and did not come to the door. I offered her some has browns and she took them gently, but would not come off of her bed. When I reached in with the leash she started to runaway, so I lowered the divider slowly to not scare her. I was able to lasso her ears to snout easily, and she came right out once secured. Once Clobeara is out of her kennel she has the cutest little trot to her walk! She prances along with mid level wags and a loose body, obviously happy to be out of kennel. We went out tot he yard, but once in the yard she stopped taking treats and tensed up a bit. She displacement sniffed around the yard and ignored me when I tried to call her. I approached her and tried to stay low, but she still tensed up as I approached. She tolerated some pets, but stiffened up and gave a quick hard stare. She relaxed after a couple seconds and tolerated some more hind pets with a neutral body, but she wasn't a fan of me pushing her, so I gave her some space. She enjoys walking, so we went for a little walk. Clobeara got her business done and happily trotted along with a wagging tail. When we went back inside I brought her to the office to see if a smaller space would be better for her than the yard. When I crouched down in the office with her she came in close and put her head in my lap, allowing some comforting head and chest pets. Another staff member was in the room, but Clobeara was very nervous of them. She approached with a tense body when the staff member crouched down, but would not get within 3 feet of them, and would not take the treat they offered. I decided to move Clobeara from the main kennels to our TTA space, to give her the quiet she needs to adjust to life in the shelter. Hopefully with a little quiet and time she will continue to come out of her shell!

Per Volunteer 10/10/24: She was laying on her bed when I approached her kennel. I dropped a few treats and after a few seconds, she got up and walked slowly towards me to eat them. I opened the kennel door and let her sniff the leash but once I moved it towards her neck to loop she moved farther back into the kennel. I closed the divider to make the space smaller and dropped some more treats. She was very loose with me just not coming forward, so I put 1 foot in the kennel and leashed her easily. She gave me a tail wag and hopped right out. Walked very slowly on leash exploring the smells with no pulling! Tail was tucked as we entered the play yard. After exploring the play yard she came off to me and sat next to me and then took Paul over and remained very loose. Seems like she's just as scared sweet girl. She briefly ran after a tennis ball. It was very cute. Got much more loose and wiggly with our walk.

Per Staff 10/8/24:
She was able to be checked and was distracted with toys and play. She warmed up a little more with some pets and allowed the handler to touch the top of her face before she stiffened up. With more time, she becomes more tolerate.

Per Staff 10/8/24:
BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:

KNOWN HISTORY:
Stray

KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Clobeara was already closed off on one side of the kennel for cleaning. When approaching her she was standing on her kuranda bed with wide dilated eyes, raised hackles, a lowered body and tucked tail. She began to bare teeth and frantically alert bark at me appearing very fearful and defensive. She never charged the front at me or escalated but remained reactive and scared in kennel, showing defensive behaviors. When trying to leash her she would dodge it and whip it off her head. After a few tries I was able to get the leash over her head and she exited slowly once I gave her lots of space on leash.

LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls moderately

HANDLING:
Once in the yard Clobeara untucked her tail and sniffed around the yard. She was tense and avoidant of me, but every once and awhile would come up and sniff me. If I made eye contact with her at all or spoke to her she would freeze and give hard eye contact and then walk off again. She had no interest in high value treats when offered . When standing near me she did allow me to lightly touch her back when approaching from the side/ behind without reaction or escalation. Anytime approaching from face on though she would freeze and tense up though giving a hard stare. She allowed handling from both staff members in the yard without issue when going slow and approaching from the side or behind vs face on.

PLAY
Very playful!

TOYS:
Toys really helped her loosen up in the yard! She gave wags and play bows hopping around chasing after plush squeaky toys, but would not take possession of them.

Per Staff 10/6/24:
Unable to check in due to behavior. P is extremely fearful and displays very tense body and whale eyes. Any time P was touched P would whip around. Placing on trazodone to help P calm down.
