Please read the bio in full for answers to your questions. In the event you have a
question that is not covered in the bio, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If
interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application which can be found at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/.
Please note that because all our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be within a reasonable distance from Wilmington, DE for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in-person home visit.
Meet Dutch! Dutch is a 10-year-old, 17 lb., Shih Tzu who was found as a stray and brought to a shelter. Super cute, and super scared, this pup needed some help.
Dutch was treated for pneumonia and received a dental. He has good vision and hearing and is fully housebroken. Dutch can handle a few stairs and walks well on a leash. He is content being in a small penned area and sleeps in a doggy bed. Dutch is good on a leash and enjoys being outside.
Dutch needs a patient family that is willing to work with him to gain trust. He would prefer an adult-only home but he gets along well with other dogs. Dutch craves affection but needs a slow approach until he feels comfortable. Once he is comfortable, he wants lots of pets, kisses, and scratches. Dutch doesn’t like being picked up or sitting in laps right now, but rather enjoys sitting near his people.
Dutch is very food motivated and tippy taps with joy when it’s mealtime. He likes hanging out with other dogs and basking in warm sunshine. Dutch gets excited to see his favorite people and has even been known to “dance” in the kitchen. If you have a big heart and a bit of patience, please open up your home to Dutch. Apply today!

The goal of Senior Dog Haven & Hospice is to find the best home possible for our senior dogs. To assist us in this endeavor, SDH&H requires a fully completed application, references, and a visit to your home by one of our trained volunteers. For this reason we only process applications within a reasonable commute from the dog's foster home.
Our adoption fee is $200, however we offer a discounted rate of $150 for senior adopters over the age of 65.

More about this rescue
We are a small, dedicated group of fosters and volunteers. We strive to improve the lives of senior dogs who find themselves without a family to care for them anymore. We do not have a facility. Our dogs live in our homes as members of our families. We provide care, comfort, companionship and, most of all, unconditional love. We have worked in senior rescue for years, and see the continuing and growing need to get them out of shelters where they are often euthanized because of their age and/or medical reasons, or from owners that find themselves in crisis and no longer able to care for their companions (nursing home, illness, abusive situations, etc).
Senior Dog Haven and Hospice is a registered 501(c)3. All donations to our rescue are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
