Thier Foster Parent Says: "Lobi is an absolute sweetheart. He recently made the trip to New York from Puerto Rico and is doing a great job adjusting. Lobi loves to play and has a lot of excited energy during play time but then is just as happy to curl up and hang out on the couch when it’s time to rest. He loves toys and is very motivated by them. He has a gentle and fun personality, does not bark much at all, and is eager to please. He gets along really well with our dog and is a great playmate. In general, he’s a bit skittish and is scared of loud noises and strangers on the street, but we think he’s doing a great job given the recent big changes in his life. Has a desire to please, so training is going well. He’s a smart boy and learned “sit”, “lay down”, and “paw” all within the first few days he was with us. He’s a really sweet guy and would make a great addition to any family ready to commit to a pup."
Level of dog ownership experience needed:
BEGINNER: This means we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale due to its breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup.
MEDIUM: Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)
Cuddle Bug Level
High — Wants to be in your lap pretty much all the time
Potty Trained
Yes — Few or no accidents
Comfy with strangers?
Yes — Fine with meeting new people but not particularly interested, kind of shy in busy social situations like a gathering or a packed day in the park.
Additional context: it’s 50/50. Some people who are very bubbly or who have dogs, he wants to say hi to, but some people on the street he gets very scared of. He’s never shown any signs of aggression when he’s scared though, he just wants to move past them.
Comfortable with Children? (ALWAYS requires supervision)
Yes for 12 and up
Social with Other Dogs?
Yes — Good with all other dogs (sizes, breeds, etc.) as far as we know and enjoys socializing with other canines. Currently in a home with another dog.
Social with cats?
Not sure yet! Some breed mixes that are generally NOT great matches for homes with cats include large hounds, huskies, and shepherds. We think that Lobi would be okay with cats given his age, temperament and breed.
Mouthy Behavior?
Medium – Is respectful of hands, feet, etc. but does like to chew on things it’s not supposed to like shoes, furniture, etc.
Additional context: he’s interested in blankets and pillows and books and tries to chew a bit on them but has yet to try to fully destroy anything.
Leash Manners?
Getting the Hang of it – Probably hasn’t been on a leash much in its life but he/she is figuring it out. Might be a mild puller but responds to correction.
Additional context: he’s a bit of a sniffer and zig zags and does some light pulling but is responding well to correction!
Okay in the city?
Mostly Yes — Spooked easily by loud noises and bustling areas but walks pretty well and probably just needs more time to adjust (may be a puppy or a brand new rescue). Okay for a home in BK, Queens, Near a major park but wouldn't do well in a very busy area ie: midtown, etc
Jumping on People to Say Hi?
Low – Jumps up only on people the dog knows when really excited. Stops with correction.
Additional context: he’s only jumped up on us, never a stranger on the street.
Separation Anxiety?
Low - Might cry for a few minutes when you first leave the house but settles pretty quickly and has no problem being left alone.
Crate training?
Not at all – Don’t even have one, I’ve puppy proofed and we free range.
Medical status
Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm negative; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake
How this dog ended up with Social Tees:
Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee or St. Thomas. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.
PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!
This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.
