My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Tootsie came in to rescue from the shelter. She has limited vision due to being born without a left eye and a small right eye. It does not stop her from getting around! She currently lives in a foster home and this is what her foster family has to say about her:

Tootsie loves walks and does well walking alone or with multiple dogs. She has a lot of energy in the morning so we find a morning walk every day really helps her.

She does well with other dogs but is very needy for affection, so wants to dominate the time and space of humans, when she has it. We would probably recommend she be the only dog, or possibly with 1 other dog that is SUPER tolerant of sharing their human.

She probably would do best with an owner that works from home or is retired with a lot of time to spend with her that also knows bulldogs and their behaviors. For example, she will jump up often when humans are seated and needs a lot of redirection regarding rules.

She can be crated at night to sleep and sleeps through the night, but does not like to be put in a crate during the day, and will bark constantly.

She loves to be outside. An owner that allows her to be outside in a “ dog safe space” would be beneficial. We use our gated side yard that has couches, a rug and an area for her to use the bathroom.

She loves to chomp on elk bones or strong/ sturdy toys and is content being by herself while playing and chomping. She is extremely mouthy when playtime comes around.

Older kids are OK to be around her who understand her limited sight issues. But probably no kids younger than 10, in our opinion.

She does not like to be pushed/backed into a crate, or corrected on certain behaviors such as where to use the bathroom. So an owner who lets their dog go to the bathroom anywhere in the yard, and who has the yard space to allow her to be outside is probably the best, as she typically does not like to be confined during the daytime.

She can walk stairs, but as she ages that may not be the best for her. Not a deal breaker if someone has a 2 story house, but just an awareness for a new owner given her limited eye sight.

So Cal Bulldog Rescue obtains homeless Bulldogs from owners who give them up to us, from individuals who find them as strays, from veterinarians when the dogs are given to them by the owners, and sometimes from animal shelters. Reasons for dogs being given up or abandoned are numerous but are often along the lines of "we have no time for the dog" or "we cannot afford the needed medical care".

Our volunteers provide foster care for homeless Bulldogs, place Bulldogs in new homes, maintain waiting lists of people who are willing to adopt, and provide education and counseling for Bulldog owners and adopters. Bulldogs taken into foster care are given necessary veterinary care, including vaccinations and heartworm preventatives. Temperaments are evaluated, and Rescue Network members do not knowingly place aggressive dogs in foster care or new homes. Training and socialization are also provided when needed.

Applicants for adoption are carefully screened via telephone interviews, home visits, and contacts with veterinarians and landlords, when applicable. Most rescue groups require the applicant to meet the Bulldog before a placement is arranged. The objective is to match rescued Bulldogs with the most suitable adopter.

Submit an adoption application through the Southern California Bulldog Rescue website.

In order to facilitate home checks and post-adoption follow-up/questions, our dogs must be placed in Southern California only. If you reside in Northern California or our of state, please contact the rescue in your area. Www.rescuebulldogs.org
