My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This compact and condensed bundle of fun is named Tux. Short for Tuxedo? Or a cross between Tenacious and Deluxe? They both fit because he is a handsome and amazing package no matter what you want to call him!

Tux looks big in his photos and that might be due to his exuberant personality. He is a swell fellow and is not afraid to use his good looks and high charm to wriggle into your heart and perhaps coax you into throwing that ball! He loves toys, loves to play, loves to engage and loves to learn. He's good with people and with other dogs. He is one fine pup.

He came to us from North Dakota where he was found abandoned in a landfill field. Between a rescue group (who regularly rescues abandoned dogs from this field!), the local Humane Society, and our recruiter, he finally came to us! Quickly becoming a staff favorite with his willingness to learn and his happy-go-lucky personality, we were disappointed that we had to release him from our high impact training to have a milder and less physically challenging working (or playing) life. He has a narrow disc space which showed up in his x-rays so, although, he shows no signs of discomfort, and maybe never will, we could not continue to have him jumping up and down on rubble piles training for search and rescue work...

However, this boy has everything we like! He is confident, communicative, socially stable, curious, willing and fun-loving. If any of those traits seem attractive...well...Tux is waiting for you!

It's always amazing when a dog comes from rough or suspect circumstances and yet continues to blossom and grow into a happy, well-adjusted, trusting creature. Tux is no exception here. He is an amazingly resilient boy who deserve his chance to shine!

More about this rescue

We are a national training center for search and rescue dogs where we professionally train and then pair talented dogs with fire department handlers at no cost to them. Dogs that do not continue with search dog training (for a variety of reasons) are career changed or available for adoption into pet homes as part of our Lifetime Care Program. This program ensures that once rescued, these dogs never need to be rescued again.

Once we find an adoptive family for our extraordinary dogs, we train the canine and the family, stay in touch with the household, and act as the dog’s advocate for life, making sure that he or she is receiving excellent care in a happy, healthy environment.

The program ensures that every dog in the SDF family has a wonderful life and is in no risk of re-entering the shelter system. This is SDF’s unwavering commitment.
