Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
Hey there! I'm Rusty, a big, lovable shepherd mix with a heart full of sweetness and just the right amount of energy. Not too lazy, but definitely not bouncing off the walls—I'm the perfect balance! I’ve already proven myself to be an amazing jogging partner, and I’d love nothing more than to go for a run and then curl up on the couch with you afterward for some well-deserved relaxation.
I am completely potty trained in a home setting, and I’ve never been one to cause trouble. My foster dad has reported that I am perfect when left alone, and haven't needed to use a crate. I’m a chill guy indoors, usually found napping away the day. I love to snuggle on the couch with my foster dad and his friends, and I really enjoy playing with my toys too. I prefer to be involved in what you're doing, even if that means laying on the kitchen floor while you are making dinner.
When I’m outside, though, it’s game on! My favorite activity is playing fetch with tennis balls. I could literally play for hours if you’re up for it. I’m also a pro at walks, especially when using a nose loop. With a little encouragement from my handler, I’ll be your perfect walking companion—big boy, gentle heart.
I’d thrive in a moderately active home where I can enjoy my daily exercise and then kick back and relax with my favorite humans on the couch. A calmer environment would be ideal for me, so a home with children aged 9 and up would be perfect. While I’m friendly with other dogs during pack walks, I prefer those that are as into playing as I am, so I could potentially be a great fit for a furry sibling—after a proper introduction, of course. But cats? Not so much—I have a high prey drive, so they’re not the best match for me.
If you’re looking for a playful yet affectionate companion who’s ready for some fun and lots of cuddle time, I could be your perfect match. Come meet me, Rusty—I can’t wait to see if we’re the perfect match!
If you would like to meet Rusty, please submit an application for him on our website https://www.friendsofmichigan.org/adoptable-dogs. He is neutered, up to date on all age appropriate vaccines, heartworm negative, microchipped, and on monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. His adoption fee is $250, which helps cover the cost of the medical care he has received.
Rusty is currently in a foster home, so we will set up a day and time for him to be brought to the shelter with his foster dad to meet you. You will be able to speak with the foster directly to get a good sense of his personality and habits in a home environment.
**Each dog is different, so each adoption is different. Our adoption process might require multiple visits to the shelter before our dogs can go home. Or they may be ready on the first visit. It really depends on the individual dog and the potential adopters. Once we receive your application, the Dog Staff will contact you to discuss meeting our dogs.

We are a nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter comprised mostly of volunteers. We take in cats and dogs from local shelters and the public who can no longer care for their pets. Each of the volunteers at FMAR has a tremendous amount of love for animals and simply wants to do what they can to ensure that as many animals as possible find a forever home. Until then, each animal has a home at FMAR indefinitely.
