My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Max, an eleven year old Corgi/Chihuahua mix.

Max's story is extremely disheartening and we hope when people read what has happened to him they will understand Max a little more and be willing to give him the time he needs. Max's owner brought him in to Owner Surrender him. Due to a variety of factors including how stressed he was and reactive with staff we informed the owner that is was not in his best interest to be left at the shelter and resources were provided to the owner for other options of rehoming him in a less stressful manner. You can imagine or sadness when the owner went to sit in their car and called local ACO and PD to report the dog as a stray, the dog was then picked up from the owner by an ACO and brought into us.

Needless to say, our initial assessment of Max not doing well at the shelter was correct. We still cannot touch his head and although we are now cautiously able to take him out for walks, the shelter is not a good place for the senior pupper. When he is in the office of one of our staff members he is very standoffish and looks at the door, waiting for his owner to come. He needs someone who will give him time to warm up, understanding that he has gone through a lot of change and is very confused. He would do best in a home with no young kids at this time. We are looking for someone who will unconditionally love this older guy and make sure he is never given up again, especially to a shelter. If you have a heart for seniors and dogs that are curmudgeon look no further. Max is a portly 23 pounds and it wouldn't hurt him to loose a few pounds. We are sure there is a heart of gold behind his standoffish nature he is just looking for the right person to show it to.

If you recognize this animal please contact the adoption center at 509-457-6854.

If you are interested in adopting this pet please fill out an adoption questionnaire at www.yakimahumane.org. A Yakima Humane Society staff member will contact you once your questionnaire has been processed. Adopters are welcome to visit the adoption center Monday-Sunday, that's right we are open all days of the week!

A Picture says 1000 words...right? While an animal's picture draws interest, the reality is that as a potential adopter most people would like as much information as possible about a pet. The Yakima Humane Society is an open admission shelter. What does this mean? Over 90% of the pets at the adoption center arrive as strays, no history of behavior or medical care is known. Adding a pet to your family is a big responsibility. Please research carefully and remember that adoption is life saving. Before you go searching for free puppies or puppies for sale, check your local Shelters for available dogs and puppies that have been vetted and are ready to go home. Adopt Don't Shop.
