My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Introducing Blu!

Playful Silly Fun Energetic

Personality: Blu is an active and playful Great Dane with a personality as vibrant as her name. She can be very silly while playing with other dogs. While she’s not dominant and lets smaller dogs be the boss, her playful antics can sometimes be overwhelming, so she needs a similarly energetic playmate. She has a playful spirit, often acting like the annoying little sibling, nipping at other dogs to get them to chase her and occasionally doing the same to her humans.

Socialness: Blu has done well at doggie daycare and enjoys playing with the other dogs she meets there. She has been around cats and small dogs. While she has a playful spirit, she does get along well and is respectful towards smaller dogs. She is very curious when it comes to cats but has not been aggressive. Blu loves all people but is best suited for a home without small children due to her size and lack of awareness of her own strength. A home with children aged 13 and older is recommended.

Training: Blu knows several commands, including sit, down, wait, and place via hand signals. She is housebroken and crate-trained, staying in her crate while eating, overnight, and when her foster family is out. Blu is very food-motivated, which aids in her training. She enjoys counter surfing, so free roam is not recommended. Blu will pull on a leash unless she’s wearing a gentle leader. Blu does best with routines and schedules, making her an excellent fit for a structured environment. Blu responds well to low-level corrections with an E-collar and allows her teeth to be brushed.

Likes and Dislikes: Blu loves playing with other dogs, balls, and going on walks and car rides. She enjoys chewing on bones and occasionally playing with stuffed animals. Running up and down the fence line with another dog on the other side is also one of her favorite activities. Blu dislikes taking baths, having her nails trimmed, and having her ears examined. She can be wary of the vet but has been improving, usually needing a muzzle on hand but not always requiring it.

Health/Special Needs: Blu is deaf, has separation anxiety, and has some allergies. She is on fluoxetine (Prozac) for separation anxiety and Apoquel for skin and environmental allergies. She also takes a compounded solution for allergies twice a day and has as-needed trazodone for stressful situations like vet visits.

Forever Home Requirements: Her forever home must have at least one other playful dog companion. To ensure her safety while playing, Blu requires a home with a physical fence due to being deaf. Blu would thrive in a home where she’s not left alone for more than six hours at a time, as she loves being around her people and gets anxious when left alone for extended periods.

Blu is a sweet, affectionate, and playful Great Dane who brings joy to everyone she meets. With her vibrant personality and love for play, she would be a wonderful addition to a family that can provide her with the activity, companionship, and affection she craves. More about this rescue

Upper Midwest Great Dane Rescue was started in 2008 by a group of Dane lovers who desire to help Danes in need. The rescue is made up of all volunteers who lovingly give of their time and money to help these wonderful dogs. Volunteers include people from every walk of life, all with one thing in common, love of Great Danes.

Each animal coming to the rescue is temperament tested, given a physical, vaccinated, wormed, checked for heartworm and tick borne illnesses and treated as needed. All dogs are sterilized before being re homed. The dog is then placed in a foster home to wait for someone to love it forever.
