Base ACCT-A-177891 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Base must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER, FOSTER, or ADOPTER by SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND at 10AM. Should Base's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Meet Base. This adoptable pup is a curious explorer, sniffing around and checking out every nook and cranny. With a happy tail wagging, Base loves to greet his human friends and enjoys the occasional burst of playfulness, but he also values his independence and time to roam. Base is patient and knows how to sit and give you his paw! While he can be a bit snatchy with treats at times, he also shows his gentle side will benefit from some patience and training. Food is definitely the way to his heart, and you'll have his full attention when treats are involved! If you're looking for a sweet and playful buddy who appreciates both fun and a little alone time, Base is the pup for you! Come meet him and see if you can be the perfect match! Base is open to meeting other dogs and children 12+. Due to his length of stay at the shelter, he is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner, foster, or adopter.
BEHAVIOR:
Per volunteer 11/1: Base was so happy to get out of his kennel he was licking me as I leashed him. Clearly trying to stay house trained he peed immediately outside. In the big run he enjoyed running around chasing balls with the occasional jump up to thank me. He has a beautiful chocolate brown coat and is very handler focused. He loved showing me his toys and enjoyed butt scratches and pets. After 20 mins of running around we went for a nice walk and harnessed he was easy to handle. Little reaction to the cars and noise from the road as we walked along. Very friendly boy who returned to kennel easily.
Per volunteer 10/18: Base was easy to get in and out of kennel. In run he enjoyed exploring all corners and sniffing everything intently. He was happy doing his own thing and ignored the dog in the adjacent run. He wanted to engage with fetch and would trade the ball for a treat. Base allowed pets all over and was just happy to be outside doing his thing in the sun.
Per staff 10/15: Strong boy, sweet.
Per day trip 10/13: This morning my husband and I took Base to the park! He did really well walking on the leash! He makes a great walking partner. He did not tug or leash grab at all. He did his business outside and was a wonderful backseat passenger. My husband ran into the store to get some treats which he took well and enjoyed the extra time in the car getting love. He LOVES pets! He was a very gentle and sweet boy. We passed some kids on bikes and he didn't notice but did get a little startled when people on motor bikes passed. He just leaned into me! All around a beautiful guy with kind eyes.
Per staff 10/11: Nice boy, sniffed a lot.
10/9 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:KNOWN HISTORY:
Stray - Police pick up
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
When approaching Base kennel he was on the backside for cleaning and had a wagging tail and neutral eyes. He took a second to sniff the leash and once secured came right out.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls moderately
HANDLING:
In the yard Base went around the yard for some sniffs, used the bathroom and greeted the handlers. He has a whipping happy tail and loves to play. Although he did have random bursts of showing interest in the handlers, most time he preferred to be on his own and sniff around the yard. He took some treats and allowed some handling but did not fully engage with us. He knows how to sit and paw and is very patient, he can be snatchy at times and gentle at others. The way to his heart is treats and you will definitely have his attention when it comes to food.
PLAY:
Engaged in play
TOYS:
Very snatchy with toys
MEDICAL:
On 10/15, Base had a vet check on 10/15 for ear issues and a URI. The canal and outside of his ears were red, swollen, and had brown debris. His eyes were still red and had some discharge. Base was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on medication. He tested positive for pneumovirus, but has since tested negative.
During his intake exam on 10/9, Base had red, dry, and dirty ears, red eyes, and small red spots of skin with hair loss. He was bright, alert, and responsive, and hyper but sweet.
