MARISSA NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!!
Name: Marissa Best Guess for Breed: Terrier/fox terrier mix
Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of August 2024 Gender: Female
Approximate Weight: 19 lbs
Gets Along With: Marissa does well with other dogs and needs to go to a home with a welcoming resident dog to help her build her confidence. We haven't seen her with cats but she can be tested. We would be cautious placing her in a home with children under 12 years old because young kids can often scare shy dogs with their level of energy or noise.
Currently Living At: DC area foster home
Special Adoption Considerations: Marissa is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months.
We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!
Additionally, Marissa was shy and shut down when she arirved at the shelter. While she has been making great strides in her confidence, she needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog. We would be cautious placing Marissa in a home with children under 12 years old because young kids can often scare shy dogs with their level of energy or noise. Children would need to be supervised closely to not leave doors open and should never walk the dog without an adult holding the leash. We would be happy to discuss this more in depth with any applicant.
Marissa is Looking For: Her forever home! This small shy sweetie arrived into our care nursing her puppies (Mario, Melvin, Mustard, Misty, Marley). She was an amazing mama to her babies and they're all off to their own families. Marissa needed to stay behind to undergo heartworm treatment and she's been stockpiling all the love and affection she lavished upon her puppies - for her new humans!
She wants nothing more than to trot through this world with all the confidence of a beloved family pet and take sniffy walks around her new neighborhood - romp in the local parks - explore the world with her new humans! The whole shelter experience has been confusing for her and she's a bit shy right now. She's seeking extra patient and loving humans who will show her that all is well, she's safe, and she's home!
In exchange she offers so many adoring gazes, so many tail wags, and loyal companionship for all her days. What do you say? Is there a Marissa-shaped gap in your home and your heart?
What My Foster Says About Me: Marissa is the sweetest dog! She’s very good at in the house, including going into her crate. She understands about going potty outside. She can be a bit of a mystery because she is both cuddly and shy, depending upon how she feels at the moment.
Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training.
TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog
