My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I’m new and FULL OF ENERGY! I'M GOING INTO THE FREEDOM TAILS PROGRAM FROM AUGUST 8 - OCTOBER 31. MORE INFO COMING SOON!

“Look no further”

I heard you were in search of the snuggliest, sweet-hearted, cuddly dog ever - that's me!
I have got it down to an art form. Do you like to watch movies, what about taking naps, how about just hanging out? I definitely enjoy all of those things and so much more! And guess what, doing those things with a friend (me) makes them so much more fun!!!

Oh, I almost forgot to introduce myself. My name is Cheddar and I am about a year old.
I am a yellow lab with some other adorable breed mixed in, your guess is as good as mine.

I have been learning some new things and people are calling me a very good boy. I am enjoying that very much.

Okay then gotta run and don't forget to check back in on me!!

Hello there,

Cheddar again!! I have been told that I know all my cues. I enjoy practicing them too, which helps me to remember them better, especially the newer ones. I've been getting them down really well.

Another thing I have been working on is my focusing skills. I am getting alot better at it. I tend to get side tracked but I'm getting better at it. I just want to go and investigate everything. I'm a dog, what do you expect haha.

Okay, time to go and play.

Howdy Folks,
It's Cheddar again and today I am going to ask you for help.

I was adopted, but honestly, it wasn’t a good fit for me. They needed a dog who isn’t as much of a social butterfly and well, that’s just not me! I want to say hello to everyone that passes by!

I am great in the house, literally none better! Don’t get me wrong, I have a ton of energy but LOVE a lazy day of couch cuddles too!

I get along with most dogs, I’m not a fan of pushy bullies… but who is?! Oh! Not bully breeds, appearances don’t matter to me, I mean dogs that have to always have their way and don’t share.

I’ve been told I would make an excellent bird dog! Some guy mentioned it to his handler, I guess he used to be a big bird hunter! Sounds like fun to me. He says I have a lot of drive, a soft mouth and I’m smart and eager to please! I’ve also been known to point here and there. Just putting it out there in case any of you reading this are looking for a dog like me.

Well, I better get back to it, I think someone may need me to help them warm up a cozy couch, HAHA!

Later gator,
Cheddar

Cheddar 10/17/24

Hello again,
Yip it’s me, Cheddar. Lately, I have been enjoying playing with some new toys and learning some new games. Since I learned everything on my standard curriculum, I am now learning to touch targets with either my paw or my nose. Well, with my paw I am amazing; with my nose….the thing with my nose is that even though I am known for being nosey, and yes that also means paying attention to EVERYTHING, I like to poke at stuff with my nose, however, I can’t help but to mess with my handler and NOT poke at stuff with my nose when it seems to me that he REALLYwants me to. HAhaha too funny!! Maybe I will start to take it easy on him.
And you wanna know something else? I have not just been a learner around these parts, I have been a good teacher, too. I know for a fact, that because of me, a valuable lesson of ethics was discussed amongst people in the Freedom Tails program. I was honestly not a good fit for the adoption that was in my future right after I got here. This was not know when the agreement was made of course, but over time it became obvious. What I helped to teach was that it is ok to feel relief when you hear an adoption has been pulled and people should be proud that their ethics and responsibility helped to do what was best for all parties involved. I know I will still get adopted and I sure don’t mind hanging around in here helping to make days better until it is another licky dog’s turn.
Well, that’s enough from me for now.

Gotta Run,
Cheddar

Howdy Y’all

Cheddar here and I must say I have the distinct feeling that I am missing bird season. True, I haven’t had that sort of training yet, but I am definitely ready for it.

This next part is for all the bird hunters out there…I could be your perfect match!!

Oh, I am “Birdy” and have a natural freeze/stock style point.
I have a soft mouth when playing fetch and can “give” to hand.
My waits can be where I learn my marks.
I am sensitive, very sensitive, to indexing gestures so my in field casts will be easy for me to learn. This will be such a great way for us to bond as a team, and as partners!
I can Kennel, Crate, and Place, so when you show me where my place in the boat or blind is, you can send me there in a jiffy.

Did I mention that my house manners are a blessing? Well, if and only if, you enjoy a good snuggle bug. HaHaHa

Well, I better go see what my handler needs my help with.

Go meet their pets

Our public hours are Tuesday - Saturday 11 am - 4pm. Dog meets may be also scheduled on Sunday and Monday by appointment only. No appointment is needed to meet our cats during public hours.
Please note that appointments are highly recommended for dog meets due to limited staff availability, but we do accommodate walk-in visits whenever possible. Additionally, many of our dogs may be located off-site in foster homes and an appointment will be required to meet those pets. We do require a completed application prior to meeting pets in foster homes to preserve the valuable time of our foster families.

More about this shelter

PAWS finds new families for stray dogs and cats as well as owner surrendered pets. We also accept animals brought to us by concerned citizens and local animal control agencies and do our best to find them suitable homes. Our mission is to find homes and offer direct care for as many of these loveable pets as possible. PAWS attempts to prevent the birth of unwanted animals through education and spay/neuter programs.

PAWS of Grays Harbor is a strictly non-profit organization and we survive because of donations from our community. All of the animals we adopt out are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and treated for fleas. Sometimes, the animals we rescue require additional veterinary care. Without your donations, none of this would be possible. Thank you for your support, we couldn’t do it without you.
