My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Guppy!

Hello! They call my Guppy, or Gup-Gup - and I can answer to both. I am VERY smart. I am also very special. I am a blind, two year old mixed breed dog. I was picked up as a stray and found a very special foster family who has been teaching me about being a dog.

It takes me awhile to get to know my surroundings and build trusting relationships, but once I do I am very loyal and playful. I love to sniff out my toys in the yard and leap around. Leash training is very helpful and important so that I know where it is safe for me to go. I do like to explore a bit too once I get comfortable. I love to be pet, and I give very big hugs and kisses. I do not know my own strength - at least that is what I hear.

I do things with great confidence and need someone who will help keep me safe and guide me. I am crate trained and very quiet when in the crate. I love to be with you and I do not pick things up or chew without permission. I hear “not yours” and “that’s moms”, so I better stop.

My foster family and their neighbors talk to me a lot so that I can get used to them and know where they are.

As you can imagine, things can surprise me and I do not really like surprises. I also HATE water. I will drink my water and am getting used to my bowl being filled, but I do not like the washing machine, dishwasher, hoses - and forget about a bath. That didn’t go so well the first time. It may take a bit.

Because I'm blind, I can get startled when life moves too fast. I would do best with older children that don't race around the house and understand that I can't see.

I am very sweet and will be a great family dog.

Our standard adoption fee is $375 cash or check and $385 credit card ($10 processing fee). . It includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at our participating vets, age-appropriate core vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative,1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, and micro-chipping.

We must have an application, conduct a phone interview, and meet your entire family to approve an adoption. Applications will not be reviewed unless fully completed. An application does not commit you to adopting and does not guarantee adoption but does allow us to begin the review process. Please understand we must meet your entire household, including dogs, before an adoption will be approved.

Please email adopt@safehavendogsIL.org for an application or additional details.

Please note that the breeds and sizes posted in this biography are educated best guesses and are not guaranteed.

Safe Haven Dog Rescue reserves the right to refuse adoption of any dog or puppy to any applicant (adopter) for any reason.

More about this rescue

We are a small 501 C3 nonprofit rescue located in Elburn, Illinois. In 2014, Safe Haven Dog Rescue became its own non-profit. We are licensed by the Illinois Agriculture Department.

The majority of our dogs and puppies are pulled from Kill Pounds and Shelters in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Illinois. We also accept local medical cases as often as our finances will allow.

Please take a few moments to read the stories about the dogs and puppies we have available for adoption. We disclose everything we know about the dogs, sometimes we know a lot often we know only that they were strays, thrown away on the side of the road, in the woods, or found in abandoned houses.

While we don’t always know their past we are certain that their future is much brighter.

We hope that you and your family are part of the future…..
