My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Duke is an amazing little puppy who is slowly but surely coming out of his shell. He was very shut down when he arrived, laying on his bed and not reacting to volunteer friends who came to check on him and pet him. Now, you`ll notice he`s still very shy, but you can win his affection easily with some yummy treats! At the shelter, Duke lives with another dog and they have fun playing together in their kennel. He`s very dog social. He still sometimes needs to be carried out of his kennel (doors are scary!) but once he gets to a playyard, he LOVES balls and rope toys and will jump and chase them and then come dive into his best volunteer friend`s lap and flop over for a belly scratch and some treats, and he will show his appreciation with a few quick face licks. :)

Duke is a joyful little guy who is still learning to trust people. But he`s learning people are friends who come with toys and yummy treats. He needs a patient adopter who will take things slowly and show him people are nice! He will come out of his shell even more quickly in a home. Duke would do great in a home with a confident, gentle, and playful dog friend who can teach him how to `dog.`

Additional adoption info

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats & kittens up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
$30 small animals
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.

More about this shelter

Austin Animal Center is the largest open-intake animal shelter in central Texas and we work very hard to try to save 90% or more of the thousands of animals we shelter every year. We always need volunteers and both monetary and in-kind donations to help us in our sheltering and prevention activities. Visit our website to find out how you can help!
