My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Charlalene had been running around the house of a Paws Animal Shelter volunteer for a few weeks. The volunteer trapped her and took her to a veterinarian where she was going to have her spayed. Once she was sedated, they realized she had a spay scar and a microchip. They went ahead and vaccinated her for FVRCP and Rabies. The volunteer then brought her to Paws Animal Shelter in hopes of reuniting her with her owner. We were able to find out more information on Cheralene from her microchip, such as her name, age, breed, and the contact information for her former owner. Our manager reached out to the former owner multiple times and left messages, but they never got back to us. It's been several weeks so we are proceeding with finding a new home for this sweet, beautiful cat. If you are unfamiliar with Bengals, they are not your normal domestic cat. We have reached out to a Bengal rescue group in the state, and they have kindly offered us the use of their adoption application for Cheralene, and they are going to help us in reviewing any applications we receive to ensure a good fit for her.

More about this shelter

The Champaign County Humane Association, Inc. (CCHA) was founded in 1977, initially relying solely on fosters to care for stray animals. In 1991 they opened Paws Animal Shelter in Champaign County, a rural county with a total population of about 39,000. In 2018 the CCHA decided to transition Paws Animal Shelter to a cat-only facility, as there is a desperate need in our area for additional shelter spaces for cats and kittens.

Thanks to a generous donation we were able to expand our shelter in 2021, which has enabled us to rescue even more cats and kittens. While this is obviously a positive development, it has definitely increased our operating costs, as so many cats and kittens that we take in have not been spayed or neutered. In addition, many cats that are surrendered to us have not been in homes with the financial resources to properly care for them, so we frequently have to pay for dentals and other expensive procedures. We are passionate about saving as many cats and kittens as possible, and they have a home with us until we find a forever home for them!
