My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Mystery and 5 other cats/kittens were brought into Paws Animal Shelter in the worst case of animal cruelty that we have seen in many years. When a resident of an apartment complex in Springfield went to take her garbage out, she heard crying from plastic kitty litter bins near the dumpster. She immediately knew something was wrong when she saw that they were taped up and tiny holes had been poked in the sides of the bins. The holes poked were so small that if this resident had not found these cats at that time, they would have suffocated very soon. This kind and caring individual rushed all six cats to Paws, where they were rescued from the bins and immediately shown love and compassion. Four cats were adults, and the other two were six-month-old kittens. Once vetted, tested, and vaccinated, they went through our two-week quarantine period. Mystery, Willey, Yuri, and Tori (the adult cats) are now in the Catacabana, one of our adult cat rooms, and are settling in nicely. They enjoy all the care and attention they're receiving, and they love to play and look out all the windows. They're looking for a loving home where they will be treasured and adored for the rest of their lives, as all pets should be. Mystery is a petite little cat, and she's very sweet and loving. She also likes to play!

More about this shelter

The Champaign County Humane Association, Inc. (CCHA) was founded in 1977, initially relying solely on fosters to care for stray animals. In 1991 they opened Paws Animal Shelter in Champaign County, a rural county with a total population of about 39,000. In 2018 the CCHA decided to transition Paws Animal Shelter to a cat-only facility, as there is a desperate need in our area for additional shelter spaces for cats and kittens.

Thanks to a generous donation we were able to expand our shelter in 2021, which has enabled us to rescue even more cats and kittens. While this is obviously a positive development, it has definitely increased our operating costs, as so many cats and kittens that we take in have not been spayed or neutered. In addition, many cats that are surrendered to us have not been in homes with the financial resources to properly care for them, so we frequently have to pay for dentals and other expensive procedures. We are passionate about saving as many cats and kittens as possible, and they have a home with us until we find a forever home for them!
