Frankie was born around December 21, 2012 and weighs too much at 19 pounds.
Here is his story.
Frankie's elderly human, passed away, and Frankie was left in the home with people coming to feed him and let him out. Frankie was then surrendered to Joyful Rescues after family members unsuccessfully bounced him around to a few homes.
Frankie was prescribed Prozac in 2021 when his owner asked the vet for it because Frankie would bark on walks.
In 2023, SPCA cruelty was involved in Frankie's life. All we know for sure is Frankie's vet was required to call the SPCA after completing a sedated shave down due to extreme matting.
Frankie has been with us for a few days, and his barking has been challenging. However, we have also seen progress.
Wednesday, we made sure Frankie followed us and participated in everything we were doing during a 'normal' day at the rescue, which meant miles of walking during chores and constant mental stimulation. Guess what? Frankie was TIRED and slept/observed quietly from the other room for the rest of the afternoon.
He also slept through the night on a different floor of the house.
This morning, he was well-rested, and the barking started up again.
Frankie doesn’t need drugs. He needs to heal emotionally with the help of well-educated humans.
Frankie needs time to undo the mental anguish of not having enough activity, losing his human, and reprograming his brain to not go to bark mode.
This will take a very dedicated human, perhaps a deaf person (just kidding), and another well-adjusted dog or two.
We have been completely ignoring his barking other than to start a new chore or activity that gets the pack moving, in turn making him move.
Frankie is overweight and has 2 or 3 fatty lumps and at his age we will not be doing extensive surgery or diagnostics on them.
We will be doing a very severely needed dental for him.
There are medical notes of irritation and sores on his back end, and yes, that area is red and irritated, which is to be expected with the extreme matting and flea infestation he must have had. His weight also prevents him from adequately reaching that area. With weight loss and proper care physically and mentally, that should all go away.
If you're still reading this and are interested in Frankie, please really sit back and really consider this. Are you ready for your life to be flipped upside down for the next 6+ months? Are YOU mentally strong enough to help Frankie be the best he can be? It's not going to be easy, but it will be worth it.
