Say hello to Bagel! This cutie pants is a 1 year-old Shih Tzu that came into rescue with his brother Sonny. He’s looking for a forever home that can provide him consistent love and encourage him to continue coming out of his shell! If you’re looking for a furry friend who will be loyal, silly, and friendly, this is your guy!
Bagel previously lived outdoors and is quickly picking up on potty training and all that comes with indoor life. He appreciates a potty schedule as he’s still working on asking to go outside. He’s crate trained and will bark for a short time before he settles into a nap. He’d likely do well in a home with shared walls as he only barks for a short period of time for minimal things. As he gets more used to things, he is known to be flighty. For this reason, it’s best that Bagel go to a home with a fenced yard or will be leashed anytime he’s outside of the home.
Bagel is nervous in new situations and requires patience for him to get comfortable. Once he is, he gets along great with other dogs and people! It’d be best for Bagel to go to a home with another resident dog who is confident and able to show him the ropes. He’d prefer a dog who will take the lead in most situations and he can follow along!
We aren’t sure how he’d do around cats but may do well if given the opportunity to meet them first. As far as kids go, Bagel prefers children who are respectful and won’t chase him. He prefers to take the lead on interactions with kids and take it at his own pace. While he’s not one to nip at anyone, he will run and hide if he’s spooked.
Bagel is an incredibly sweet guy who’s eager to show his forever family what a good dog he can be! He adores affection and playtime and appreciates the love and stability other humans can give him. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.
Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.
Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.
We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.
We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
