Say hi to Sonny! This sweet guy is a 1 year-old Shih Tzu who is ready to take on the world one tennis ball at a time! He’s looking for a forever home that can continue to guide him on how to be the best dog possible.
Sonny came into rescue with his brother, Bagel, and previously lived outdoors. He’s doing great at learning the indoor life and the potty training that comes with it. He’s still working on asking to be let outdoors but is taking well to a schedule. Sonny is crate trained and will only whine for a short period of time before settling. For this reason, he may be an ideal pup for a home with shared walls! He is, however, a bit flighty when he gets scared and would do best in a home with a fenced yard or will be leashed anytime he’s outside.
Many experiences are still very new for Sonny and he’d appreciate a confident resident dog who can teach him the ropes. Once he’s comfortable, he loves to play and be his goofy self! He has yet to meet a cat, but he’d likely be scared at first. A meet-and-greet may be necessary prior to adoption to a home with cats.
As far as kids go, Sonny prefers children who are respectful and won’t chase him. He prefers to take the lead on interactions with kids and take it at his own pace. While he’s not one to nip at anyone, he will run and hide if he’s spooked.

Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.
Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.
Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.
We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.
We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
