My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

When Alma was whisked out of a Texas shelter by NorthStar, she jumped into the rescuer’s car and immediately crawled into the driver's lap and laid down. She didn’t know what her future held, but she knew it had to be better than her past and she was finally safe.

Alma has had surgery to remove mammary tumors – unfortunately the tumors were malignant and there is a chance they will recur. This was not the news we were hoping to hear. But this little lady doesn’t understand that her future might not be as bright as we had hoped it would be. She just knows she is safe and loved and having a wonderful time in the care of her foster mom, hoping that someone, somewhere will decide to give her a forever home in spite of her health challenges. Alma is 12 years old and weighs only 12 pounds – we do not know how much time she has left, but we are dedicated to making sure she makes the most of this time.

Alma’s foster mom says, “This little girl is so precious. I am absolutely going to cry my eyes out when she leaves my home. She is so grateful and affectionate and loving. I just can’t stand the thought of her having a terrible life before she was rescued. She’s an angel!"

Alma has also been suffering with an eye issue which hasn’t responded to antibiotics so far. The vet is trying something new and if all else fails, will do x-rays to be sure there isn’t a foreign body embedded in there. She also had an abscessed tooth removed during her badly-needed dental. This girl has had more than her share of health challenges! But she happily takes her medicine in peanut butter (check out the video) and is very sweet, although a bit shy at first. She originally lived with a homeless woman and life on the streets couldn’t have been very good.

If you want to bring into your life a little dog who really needs your love and spoiling, please consider meeting Alma. We can’t know how much time she’s got left but NorthStar really wants the rest of her life to be the best it can be.

If you so desire, please fill out an adoption application to adopt this little nugget at www.northstarpets.org and ask for ALMA TX. The adoption fee for Alma is $250 and we think you will feel that it is money well spent!

More about this rescue

In many areas of the country, especially in the South, the situation for animals is desperate: Chained outside and starving, homeless and running loose, or just simply no longer wanted and abandoned in an overburdened and underfunded facility that can’t possibly take another. For these animals, there is not much hope…except to look in the night sky for the North Star, their only way out. We are a group of passionate volunteers committed to saving these innocent dogs and finding them a new forever home. NorthStar Pet Rescue was founded in 2017, and although we might be a relatively new name among New Jersey animal rescues, you may recognize some of us from the work we’ve done volunteering with other rescues to help animals over the past decade. We are 100% dedicated to operating in an safe, transparent, and ethical manner and to ensuring the best veterinary practices are followed with regards to the care and transport of our animals. NorthStar Pet Rescue is IRS 501(c)(3) charitable organization (EIN: 81-5348036).
