My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Lovely ACCT-A-177425 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Lovely must have confirmed placement with an ADOPTER or RESCUE PARTNER by TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8TH at 10AM. Should Lovely's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

Lovely came to the shelter on 10/2 as a stray and has not been enjoying her stay here. She was very fearful when she was found and has been reactive in kennel, displaying behaviors such as snarling, growling, and lunging. She is much better out of kennel, calming down a lot, allowing handling, and was even good for her vaccines without any restraint. She has had a good dog meet at the shelters and is open to meeting other dogs. Any children in the home must be over the age of 15 because of her level of fear. Due to her fear and reactivity in the kennel, Lovely is urgently seeking placement with an adopter or rescue partner who can allow her time to decompress in a quiet environment.

BEHAVIOR:

Per Vol 10/5; Such a sweet girl! I took Lovely out for the photo shoot today and she was such a good girl. I stopped by a few times throughout the day to drop treats since she was hesitant to leave kennel. After a bit I opened the back door and she was easily leashed. She also walked right out of kennel and followed me outside. Once outside she really opened up with some time. She solicited attention and allowed all petting. She met another dog through the fence and remained loose but not overly excited. While getting her photo during the shoot she was sweet and calm. Upon return to kennel she easily stepped in after me and had no issue removing leash. Such a great girl, just needs a little time.

Per staff 10/5: Volunteer and [staff] attempted to take dog out of kennel for a walk. She is in a corner of kennel cowering not moving. Could not take out at this time.

Per staff 10/4: When I checked on lovely in TTA, she had been doing a persistent growly bark (not at me, just in general). She looked at me with hard eyes while I talked to her. If she is still so tense tmrw, I will check with the Dr about adding more meds since there was concern of pregnancy.

10/3 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Stray
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Lovely was on the backside sitting up on the door. When the handler approached she snarled at the handler, smashed her face and lunged at the door. She was snarling and refused to be leashed, snarling and growling at the handler. The handler opened the door to show her the leash and leaped at her hand and snapped at her so she shut the door. She remained reactive while the handler tried to calm her down. She growled and bared teeth with baby talk and the handler's presence.. This continued for about 3 attempts. She got tired and sat there dodging the leash but still growling and baring teeth. Once leashed she continued to growl and bare teeth refusing to exit the kennel while she needed some coaxing and leash pressure.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls minimally
HANDLING:
Once outside, Lovely calmed down a lot! She shook off and walked well on leash next to both handlers. Her body language relaxed significantly as well. She walked calmly beside us and was easy to handle outside. We sat at a bench and she came over and allowed me to pet her head and back without issue and then walked up to the second handler as well allowing pets. She was tolerant for all handling and did well meeting multiple staff members while out. She had a dog meet with Tinka and was very calm and tolerant to existing around each other. Afterwards we went to the eval room to hang out and Lovely remained calm and easy to handle, allowing handling without any problems! She took treats gently when offered and showed knowledge of sit as well!

COLOR LEVEL & ANY RECOMMENDATIONS:

Per staff 10/2: Very fearful. Was able to pick up and out of truck - allowed me to pet her back and pat her butt. was good on her leash- once in kennel and I returned a few hours later i was back at square one with her - she is just scared - be slow and she will warm up.

Per staff 10/2: Homeowner stated that there was a female dog on his porch when he came home . Upon arrival dog was secure by leash to fence. Dog shut down and terrified. Needed to use [a control pole] because of dogs fear and the amount of people and kids outside. Easy to loop on pole. Tried to bite stick but stopped when I told her to. When I got her down the stairs she alligator rolled - once able to release pressure she was fine but pooped in fear. A female neighbor helped me get her into the truck- she was so scared she peed everywhere. Once back to shelter she would not look at me keeping her back to me but let me rub her butt to try to calm her down. This dog was dumped. She recently had puppies and she is confused and scared.

MEDICAL:
On 10/3, Lovely was started on gabapentin to help her fear and kennel reactivity.

During her intake exam on 10/3, staff noted that her eyes, ears, and nose were clear, although her left eye had broken blood vessels due to stress when coming in to the shelter. She had moderate dental staining, some tartar. Her skin was clean with no fleas or hair loss. They also noted that her behavior was "much better out of kennel, friendly, warmed up especially with food, allowed vaccines and chip without restraint.
