My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

My name's Ramsey. I'm about a 5.5 year old, 75 lb handsome and fun loving boy. I love to play ball and will bring it back to you (mostly) and drop it and that's fine. When I want to keep it to myself I get a little stingy but a second ball solves that and I'm off again. I am definitely a ball dog. I have been hanging out with a trainer for the last 3 weeks learning my basics. It's been fun and I've learned a lot but it's time to find my new home.

Everyone says I'm the prototypical German Shepherd. I'm smart, loyal, alert, playful, friendly, affectionate and handsome - did I say handsome already? In my prior foster home I liked to lay at the top of the stairs observing my "zone of control" which was the front yard, sidewalk, street and sidewalk across the street. I let out a easy bark to alert my family when I see something or if someone comes to the door but I stop when I'm asked to. If my people tell me it's ok I'm all about making friends and will greet new people with a happy face and wagging tail. Once we're friends I don't forget and enjoy getting attention.

I have lived with dogs before but may be best as an only dog. I can get a little bossy at times with high value items.  I may get a little excited when I see a new dog face while out walking but I get over it when I'm asked to be chill and I'm learning more every day. I walk well on leash, have good basics and love to go for rides. I'm a good boy in the house and don't chew stuff up and will go outside when I need to. I will follow you around (I'm a GSD after all) and will hang out where I can keep you in my sights.

I would like a home that has a little room to stretch my legs, smell the yard, maybe patrol the perimeter and just be with you. I do like to harrass the squirrels if you have some around and I'm much too interested in cats so best there aren't any in the home (Sorry, can't help myself).  Don't forget, a new home will be all new to me and I will just need a little time to adjust and realize this is HOME and you are MINE. Once I get it all figured out, I will always be by your side, ready to play, ready to chill and ready to be loved. I'm not used to being around small kids and I can get a little stingy and grabby with high value treats and my ball so an adult home would be best.

One more thing, I'm not really fond of the vet. I have been muzzle trained and prefer to wear it so everyone is comfortable. I'm friendly but I need to trust before being 'examined'. If you would like to meet me, I will be waiting in Santa Rosa.

Go meet their pets

We don't have a lot of events or meet-and-greets. We may do a few a year however we want our meetings to be as calm and natural as possible. We have found that large events are extremely overstimulating and distracting for most dogs and not the best place to meet. We prefer to meet in environments that allow more one-on-one, direct interaction so you get a feel of how the dog will respond you and your family.

More about this rescue

We love German Shepherd Dogs for all the same reasons you are looking here today. They are loyal, intelligent and beautiful animals. They can be big goofballs, feisty spitfires, working dogs, sport enthusiasts, movie critics, couch warmers, dock divers, scent detectors, hiking buddies, travelers, family protectors......you name it, the GSD can do it. If you are lucky enough to have a GSD in your life you will understand just how special they are.

We are a 501(c)(3) 100% volunteer organization. We began our mission in 2013 with the dream of saving as many of these beautiful and often misunderstood dogs as we could. We are a small rescue but we have a mighty team and we have saved over 2,000 dogs!

Most of our dogs come from shelters local to our rescue. There are many reasons dogs end up in shelters and we find most of them are not the fault of the dog. Are there purebred GSDs in shelters? ABSOLUTELY. Are there good dogs in shelters? There are GREAT dogs in shelters. Some of our dogs come from owners who, for many reasons, can no longer care for them and ask our help in finding a new loving forever home. The good news is that we encounter few dogs that have been abused or seriously mistreated.

Each dog that comes into our program is carefully evaluated and then placed into a foster home when available. Foster homes are critical for our rescue and it's the best way to really get to know the dog. If we don't have an appropriate foster home available, we will temporarily use one of our approved boarding/daycare facilities while getting to know the dog and waiting for a foster home to become available. We do not warehouse our dogs! Every dog in our care gets one-on-one attention from our volunteers/fosters. They are socialized, vetted, allowed to decompress and show us who they really are. Once we have spent some time getting to know each dog, we make the dog available for adoption.

If you aren't ready to adopt but still want to help, please consider fostering a GSD. We have all types of GSD's, from older 'fireside' dogs to younger puppies full of puppy energy. Fosters are truly the backbone of a rescue and without fosters, we would not be able to save these wonderful dogs. The rescue pays for all costs and will provide everything needed. All you need to provide is a safe, loving environment. Our dogs are in a foster home anywhere from a week to several months and we provide relief fosters if you have an emergency or need to be away from home for a few days. If you have ever thought about fostering, now is the time as there are record -breaking (and heartbreaking) numbers of dogs in shelters that need a second chance. Please consider becoming a foster home.

As a non-profit rescue, we are extremely grateful to our donors. Without YOU there would be no US. All donations are tax deductible and used for vetting, food, training, etc. We have no paid staff. The majority of our costs are medical as each dog receives required vaccinations, age and health appropriate spay/neuter, flea/tick treatment, heartworm testing and monthly treatment, worming and microchip. We often take dogs that need additional medical treatment and we also get dogs that have unknown issues that need to be treated. Your donations help us help those that need us most. A leg will heal and a heart will heal and our donors make it all possible.

And of course, we always need volunteers to help us transport, groom, walk, play with, train and on the "non" contact side, adoption counselors, fundraising, grant writing, social media....you name it we most likely need it. Even an hour a week makes a difference and we're with you every step of the way.

Our motto has always been "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DOGS" and we live by it. Our dogs have always been and will always be our #1 priority.

Thanks for checking us out and thank you for your support!!
