My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adoption Donation   $399

Located:  RI

Age: approx. 10 years old as of 10/1/2024

Weight: 11  lbs.

Maddie is a sweet, lovable, friendly Pekingese girl. Our best guess is she is around ten years old. She is eleven pounds of cuteness and was found wandering the streets of Pawtucket. When no one claimed her, the shelter contacted us and one of our fosters immediately went and got this beautiful girl out of the shelter and into a loving temporary foster home.

Best home scenario: Maddie would do well in a home with another well-behaved dog but could also thrive in a home where she is the only pet. Maddie does not hold her bladder for long periods (in other words, she pees frequently), so leaving her alone all day is not ideal. She is pee-pad trained. Maddie hasn't shown much interest in playing with toys, but when our neighbor's dog comes over to visit (we keep a basket of toys for her), she has a lot of fun chasing the neighbor’s dog while they fetch the toys.
  • As she goes to the bathroom a lot, a home with a fenced yard would be best for her and her owner.
  • Her compatibility with cats is unknown .
  • She is good around children, but her behavior around toddlers is unknown.
  • She wants to be with her human so much and will try to follow you out of the house, another reason a fenced yard is best. She will run straight towards your walking path if you aren't careful!

Temperament: She is completely devoted to her human(s) and will follow them around unless she is napping in her bed or on the couch. As soon as her human sits, she'll want to get on their lap. If you pet your other dog, she will nestle her head between the two of you to get your full attention. Maddie is truly a love bug. She tends to mimic other dogs' behaviors, so if your other dog is a barker, she will be too. She never initiates the barking frenzy but definitely joins in.
  • She's easy to bathe but is slightly fearful of the hairdryer, and runs around the house like a whirling dervish when bath time is over.
  • She gets comfortable fairly quickly on car rides.
  • She loves her walks. She starts briskly and becomes slow and stubborn, wanting to sniff everything. Be patient as she may poop multiple  times during a walk. She doesn't chase cars but will want to meet every person or dog she encounters.

Important things to know : In late August, Maddie had spay surgery and four mammary masses removed (biopsy results were negative). There remains one small left side mammary tumor with no plans to remove at this time. She has a grade 4-5 heart murmur and is on heart medication for life, as well as anti-seizure medication that will need to be re-evaluated after one year. Blood work is due in six months. She is on the waiting list for dental which will be funded by FOHA.

If you are interested in adopting me, please fill out an application on our website  www.fohari.org  and email my foster parent for more information:  lisa.isaksen@yahoo.com

Please verify the location and readiness of this dog with us.  Because we save lives from various locations through-out the United States, some dogs may not be in New England yet, nor ready for immediate adoption.

Our adoption application can be found here: https://fohari.org/application/

Our Adoption Process:

  • Go to our website and select the animal you are interested in.

  • ALL animals are in foster homes as we do NOT have a  shelter where you can visit. Some animals are in foster care in New England, and some are located in other states. If the initials following the animals name are a state, then that is the state where the animal is located. If initials are not a state, then those are the initials of the foster home outside of New England and you will not be able to meet the animal ahead of time.

  • Complete our online application

  • You will be contacted by phone or email by the foster parent  or a member of our adoption team and will have the opportunity to find out more about the animal, and ask any questions that you have to ensure the animal is a good fit for your household. If the animal is local, you can meet the animal, but you would not be able to take the dog home until you are approved to adopt.

  •  From our end, we will check references and schedule a home visit.

  • If you live in an apartment, or a condo, we will need to verify permission to own the animal from your landlord or condo board. Please let your vet’s office and references know we will be contacting them. If your  references are positive, we will schedule a home visit by a volunteer.

  • Please try to accommodate the home visit volunteer as most  have busy schedules. Delays in the visit will result in a delay in the adoption.

  • Once you are approved, you will receive an e-mail with your  adoption contract attached. This e-mail will have details about pick up, the balance of the adoption fee that is owed, etc.

  • Please email your signed & witnessed contract and pay your adoption fee in full, and for any animals located out of state, you will be contacted for details about transport to New England.

  • Once you have paid your adoption fee in full and sent back your contract, you can make arrangement to pick up your animal from the foster home or from transport depending on where the animal is located. Please bring a harness, collar, ID tag and leash when you are picking up the dog unless otherwise instructed by the foster parent.

  • Our extensive approval process is intended to ensure the best fit between our animals and adopters. Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA) reserves the right to deny any adoption application with or without disclosure of cause.

Your adoption fee helps to cover the cost of all age appropriate vetting and transportation. FOHARI.ORG makes no explicit or implicit guarantees in reference to the health, temperament and/or the breed of the animal. The animal is adopted ‘as is’, and the adopter assumes all responsibility for treatment of any and all existing conditions or any other conditions of physical or temperament changes that may occur. FOHARI.ORG will provide the animal with the basic vaccines, heart worm test and sterilization of dogs and cats before adoption if the age and current health of the animal permits. While FOHARI.ORG

makes every effort to place only healthy animals, FOHARI.ORG cannot guarantee the health of any animal, and shall not be held responsible for any medical expenses that may be incurred. Rescuer will provide information received from the veterinarian exam, observations on the temperament of the animal and a best guess of the breed.

OUR ADOPTION DONATIONS:

Please remember our dogs generally all have a pull fee from a shelter, LOTS of vet costs for initial shots and tests, spay or neuter, and then transport costs to bring the dogs to our area. This is just the beginning of the costs for a rescue. We then depend on our volunteers to buy the dog food, we pay for any additional vetting costs and grooming for the dog. There are many costs and we depend on our adoption donations to HELP pay our costs. We are a non-profit charity 501(c)3 and depend on donations for rescuing our dogs. Most times, the adoption fee does not cover the costs associated with that dogs rescue costs.

Donations are listed on each dog's description.

References listed on your application will be checked prior to any meetings with a dog. We do require a HOME VISIT PRIOR to any adoption.

Some dogs are local, but many are not - they are in various locations so it will not be possible to meet some of them before you adopt.

We only will transport the dogs if you make a firm commitment and a $200 DEPOSIT as the paid transport is costly & difficult to arrange & we do not have enough foster homes.

Deposit Donations can be made by Paypal:
