My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Backyard breeding stole Coco's chance at a long life.

Can you help Coco find a family to call her own for the time she has left? Share / Apply today at rbari.org.

At just 3-years-old, Coco is in heart failure due to the horrors of backyard breeding. The breeder who surrendered her bragged about his dog producing 23 puppies - 2 litters by csection. Coco has a congenital condition that was exacerbated and likely spread to her offspring by constant breeding.

Coco has spent her entire life getting pregnant, caring for babies and having them torn away. It's so cruel that Coco is facing a fatal condition just as she finds her freedom. Her owner made a profit off Coco, but has no money to provide her with medical care when her body filled with fluid from heart failure.

Coco is on heart medication to help manage her condition. At 50 pounds, Coco is adorably short and low to the ground. She is seeking a calm home where she can mostly hang out on a couch and cuddle. She eats well and takes her medication like a champ. Her care will continue to be supported by RBARI, as we seek to find Coco a family to give her the love and devoted care she has always deserved.

Please consider a donation towards our Community Pets program in Coco's honor. "Exotic" bullies like Coco are now being bred for their looks, size and short stature, which results in chronic health conditions that are passed on to puppies. With so many bullies dying in shelters, the notion that more are being bred and sold is unfathomable. We are working with the breeder to spay / neuter some of their other dogs to stop the cycle, particularly breeding chronically ill dogs. And, we will continue our work reaching into a community in need to provide support to the most innocent victims, like Coco.

Please share for Coco! We are hopeful that with medical care she will have quality time, but are anxious to get her into a loving home. It is our biggest hope to find Coco's special person today before it's too late!

More about this shelter

Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. is founded on the belief that all animals have a natural right to humane treatment including proper care and safe shelter. Due to overpopulation, there are insufficient homes for most cats and dogs. Some are lucky enough to find temporary shelter and a few even find permanent homes. However it is a devastating fact that the majority are either euthanized or forced to chance life without shelter.

To support our belief and to relieve the unnecessary suffering of animals, we shall:
1.Extend every effort to find, evaluate, and secure good adoptive homes for animals in our care.
2.Provide animals with medical services and behavior therapy to the extent of our ability.
3.Adhere to a “no-kill” policy: animals shall not be euthanized for the purpose of providing space for new animals.
4.Adhere to a 100% spay and neuter policy.
5.Maintain continuing humane education programs and in particular to schools.
