My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

At the age of five, our handsome Jacob is an active adult dog who loves the outdoors. He held his own in the New York Shelter environment, which can terrify some dogs. He was initially reported to be shy and timid, and it seemed that the chaos and uncertainty of his situation left him rattled. After unwinding a bit with shelter staff and volunteers, Jacob was transferred to our Connecticut Rescue.

Jacob came out of his shell as soon as he arrived here. He has a delightful personality and is extremely affectionate, but he can be suspicious of some strangers. He needs a savvy rescue dog adopter who can continue to socialize him in situations in which he feels safe.

Jacob appears to be a stunning Blue Tick Coonhound. He is a tall, muscular dog at 30 pounds, slightly smaller than breed standard Coonhounds. He may have a bit of Beagle in his DNA mix that explains his small stature. Jacob could stand to gain a few pounds and would be at an ideal weight in the 35 pound range. His short, flat coat is tricolor with the "tick" pattern characterizes the breed, and requires minimal grooming. Jacob has a lean, leggy physique, with a proud stance and all of the wonderful attributes of a Scent Hound.

Jacob has a high energy personality and would thrive in an active home with experienced adopters. He would be the ideal choice for an active single or couple, whose lifestyle allows for him to participate front and center.

Jacob would do best in a calm environment, with folks who would allow him time to warm up slowly and investigate his new surroundings at his own pace. He craves a strong human connection and would thrive in a home with fewer dogs and people, so that he could enjoy the limelight. His ideal situation would be a quiet home with perhaps one other active, well-trained dog.

We sense some initial shyness in Jacob’s delicate nature. We have focussed on confidence building by activating his Scent Hound instincts. He enjoys leisurely walks where he can take in nature, but he can quickly adapt to a jogging pace. Jacob is an active dog who needs mental and physical stimulation. He has a moderate energy level, and would make a great walking or running companion. He would be a great addition to camping or hiking trips. The time he spends outdoors seems to thrill him.

Jacob has progressed nicely on his obedience training, and he has already passed many of the Canine Good Citizen tests and has learned his basic obedience sequence. He is very treat motivated and easy to train. He may become occasionally distracted by the random scents of nature, but he redirects nicely and seems to enjoy his training sessions. Ongoing focus on obedience training will provide Jacob leadership and mental stimulation that he needs to thrive.

Jacob has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained, but adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home.

Jacob is in good health, has been neutered and has received routine health screenings. He has been microchipped and dewormed. If you are interested in Jacob, please write to Angelsfrgod@aol.com or call/text Denise at 860-908-9738 for more info.
