Bambi - GSD/Carolina - Male - 1.5 yrs - www.twyla.org
If you'd like to know more about this dog please visit our website at www.Twyla.org
Meet Bambi: this GORGEOUS Shepherd / Carolina Dog mix (we think), came into our program as a medical intake - he had come to the Humble city shelter in horribly skinny condition (24 lbs), only to promptly suffer seizures and being taken to a Vet. We took over his care from there - he was transferred to the ER where doctors stabilized him and began looking for causes. Bambi has Glycogen Storage disease - a rare metabolic disorder that prevents him from regulating his blood sugar at normal rate, causing it to drop quicker than normal, triggering seizures. This means that he has to eat in very regular intervals and is on seizure medication.
Despite all this, Bambi has grown into a big beautiful, gentle and sweet dog, with a full soft coat of fur and eyes that are very efficient at begging for attention. And treats. Bambi loves to follow his people all over the house, he gets along well with the other dogs in the house and he loves to eat. He walks pretty well on leash, is good in a crate and rides well in the car. He is happiest on the Sofa next to his person, or eating his meals.
Bambi is a special boy who has come such a long way and he is looking for a very special home: Glycogen Storage Disease is manageable but has to carefully monitored and meal times ad medication times require a pretty strict adherence to the timelines - skipped meals can cause major issues. Bambi is also what we call a "Goat", he eats everything, and we mean everything. Eatable or not, he does not discriminate, so his environment has to be carefully decluttered, casual discarded hair scrunchies or snack wrappers will go down the hatch in the blink of an eye and may cause gastrointestinal issues at best or a blockage at worst. Surgery for a dog with his disease is tricky as fasting is required, but fasting is not one the the things he can do.
Bambi is looking for a home where someone is home a lot, is able and willing to adhere to his meal and medication schedule and can make sure he doesn't eat inappropriate things. He can be an only dog or have other dogs in the household, he doesn't really care. He has not been tested with cats. He can (and currently does) live with older kids that know to keep front doors closed, food and non food items out of his reach.
***Please note: All dogs are fostered in private homes of volunteers, so to meet a dog please fill out an Adoption Application on our website (http://www.twyla.org/adopt/our-adoption-process) so we may setup a private meetup with the dog or coordinate for an Introduction at the next general Adoption Meet and Greet (as listed on our website: (http://www.twyla.org/upcoming-events), as not all dogs attend all Meet and Greets***
