Miss Gretel came to the rescue as a stray in San Antonio. She was found with a large abdominal mass and had a major surgery to remove her spleen, have her spayed, and repair a hernia. She recovered like a champ!! She had a minor ear infection and later had some discrepancies in her bloodwork, but she completed her meds and has been cleared for adoption by a veterinarian.

Gretel is a spunky wire-haired 9 year old that is always ready for a trip outside or on a walk. Being older, she sometimes needs a break, but needs no coxing to get going again once she’s ready. Once home, she is content to snuggle with you on the couch or stay near your feet and has no problem telling you which one she prefers. If you don’t currently have a doorbell, you will after adopting Gretel. She lets you know about anything she hears outside and loves nothing more than to bark at the neighbors.

Gretel has done fine with her foster siblings and lets out a low growl when her blind sibling gets close to where she is hanging out. This does extend to food, but she’s been very receptive to a quick redirect and hasn’t shown any signs of true aggression. She is, however, extremely food motivated and will do anything she can to get into a bag of kibble or food scraps if she knows it’s there. Surprisingly, she’s very polite when taking and asking for treats and waits her turn without problem. It’s best to make sure her food is put away securely.

Overall, Gretel is quite the character and has lots of life in her yet. She is brave, smart, curious, and sweet as pie... Considering her traumatic beginnings, she has come a long way and has a lot of love to give!!

More about this rescue

Diamond Dachshund Rescue of Texas is an all volunteer group in the heart of Texas that is dedicated to the health, welfare and happiness of our dachshund friends. We are based in San Antonio, Texas but we have fosters/volunteers in Austin, San Angelo and DFW areas. We are a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. As such, we must rely heavily on donations and contributions to be able to pay the costs of health care, administrative needs, and other necessary expenses for each of our dachshunds. Diamond Dachshund has rescued, rehabilitated and placed approximately one hundred dachshunds each year since our incorporation in 1998. That's a lot of happy, healthy dogs and equally happy families! We strive to find the right home for each dog's individual personality and needs, so that the placement is permanent and both the dogs and the humans who adopt them, are equally happy.
