My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Max! He is a beautiful Golden Retriever mix who loves cuddles and walks. We have noticed that he can be a bit of an escape artist, and we believe this stems from separation anxiety and his need to find people if he is left alone. This very well could be shelter behavior as he would not get the same level of attention here as he would in a home.

He follows directions well and understands commands such as "sit", "lay down", "calm", "up" and "down". He jogs and walks well because he prefers to stay by your side. If he gets too excited the word "calm" helps him relax. He is extremely smart and has so much left to learn and is very eager to do so.

He can be nervous around other dogs, but has shown interest, so a meet and greet is required if you have any other dogs.

You can meet Max at our main ranch location or email dogswmr@gmail.com

More about this shelter

Our shelter had it's beginnings in the mid 90's and formally became a nonprofit organization in 2001. The dream of Lee and Sophia DiClemente has grown to be the largest no-kill animal shelter in New Mexico. Lee passed in 2010, but Sophia carries on with the support of a small staff, a large number of volunteers, and numerous donors - large and small.
