Meet Twinkie! Twinkie is an 8 week old "cockapoo mix who was saved from a commercial breeding facility in Lancaster county due to having a tail injury caused by a littermate. The puppy mill was not going to be able to sell a puppy with a broken and wounded tail, and it wouldn't heal in time for him to be profitable to sell, so they simply decided to get rid of him.
Twinkie was checked out by our veterinary team who helped get him cleaned up and determined he his tail injury was actually caused by another dog chewing off part of his tail. Thankfully, the wound is healing normally and they didn't have any concerns for any issues with his recovery. This sweetheart is understandably shy and nervous at first, but is doing a great job learning to trust new people!
As with all dogs we save from puppy mills, they will need a family who is understanding and prepared to work through a period of transition with them as they learn to live in a house and around people. They will need time to trust their new family before working on training, such as house training. This should go without saying, but we require all our animals to be trained using positive reinforcement methods ONLY. Puppy mill dogs tend to do best in a home without young children as well (10+), though this determination is made on a case by case basis.
