My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Dixie, also known as Mama Dixie! This 2-year, 10-month-old Collie mix weighs in at a healthy 64 pounds and sports a beautiful sable tricolor coat. She’s not just a pretty face—Dixie is full of love and ready to share it with her forever family.

Dixie has impeccable house manners and is fully house-trained—she’s great at letting you know when it’s time for a bathroom break by heading to the door. While she’s not a fan of crates, Dixie doesn’t need one to be a perfect house guest. She’s happy to nap on a cozy blanket, dog bed, or snuggled up next to her people. She loves being close to her humans, and her favorite spot is anywhere near you.

Dixie enjoys the company of other dogs and is a friendly, playful companion. She’s happiest running laps, exploring the yard, or chasing toys with her canine friends. She hunts for little critters in the yard, so we aren't sure if cats would be the right match. While she loves to socialize, she does prefer her personal space when it’s time to rest—especially after being such a devoted mama to her puppies.

Dixie is wonderful with kids, particularly those in elementary school and older. Her gentle temperament makes her a great family dog, and she’s always up for a bit of playtime. She has some mild herding tendencies—thanks to her Collie background—so homes with very small children should be aware of these behaviors. With the right balance, Dixie will quickly become a treasured part of the family.

Dixie has recently been spayed and is finishing up a course of antibiotics for Lyme disease and anaplasmosis, though she’s asymptomatic. Despite these health hurdles, Dixie is full of life and energy! After giving birth to nine beautiful puppies in June 2024 and raising them with love and care, Dixie is now ready to be the center of attention in her new home. Her energy is back to full strength, and she’s blossomed into a lively, playful dog who enjoys every moment with her humans.

Prepare for lots of kisses! She’s a "kissy-face" kind of girl, always ready to shower her family with affection. She loves to "claim" you by gently placing her paw on your lap as if to say, "You’re mine now!" She also enjoys very soft plushies, especially little Lambchop, that she can carry around with a cozy blanket to hide them in and nap on.

Her dream home would include a quiet neighborhood with lots of space to explore, hopefully with a fenced yard to explore to her heart’s content. Because she may be a bit vocal when she’s excited or monitoring her home, she is not suited for apartment living or other homes with shared walls. She enjoys being part of the action and keeping an eye on her surroundings—whether that’s chasing squirrels in the yard or alerting you to visitors.

If you’re ready to welcome a sweet, devoted dog into your home, Dixie is ready to meet you! Don’t miss the chance to add this loving, affectionate girl to your family—fill out an application today and discover the joy that Dixie can bring to your life.

The adoption fee is $450. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
