My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Cheerio, a sweet Goldendoodle looking for an experienced, dog-savvy home to call her own! Cheerio loves squeaky toys and is a total pro at fetch, she even likes to bring a toy with her on walks. Cheerio came to us with some leash reactivity, but with consistent positive reinforcement she has been making good progress and is learning not to bark and jump at people and dogs when she's out on walks. She will need a consistent routine and a calm environment where she can enjoy walks and training without needing to be on the lookout for strangers, and having access to a yard would be absolutely fantastic for her! Cheerio loves to learn new things, and an experienced owner that is comfortable handling large dogs will find that she will try almost anything for a beef liver treat!

Cheerio is very good about being brushed, but wary of the clippers and scissors that are necessary to maintain her fluffy coat. Desensitization and an experienced groomer are a must for keeping her clean, comfortable, and healthy. Cheerio may be successful in a home with a confident canine companion to teach her the ropes, as after a calm introduction Cheerio is very playful with other dogs. However, we don't recommend Cheerio go to a home with cats or young children. We strongly recommend that Cheerio's adopters meet with an AnimalKind trainer to get started on the right foot once she gets home, and to ensure her training is consistent. With gentle guidance from an experienced owner, she is sure to become more confident and eager to explore the world around her with newfound assurance.

More about this shelter

Our Mission:

The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia. Through its 36 branches located around BC and its provincial office in Vancouver, the BC SPCA provides a wide range of services for more than 53,000 homeless, abused, and abandoned animals around the province. The BC SPCA was created under the auspices of the provincial Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and is the only animal welfare organization in BC which has the authority to enforce laws relating to animal cruelty and to prepare cases for Crown Counsel for the prosecution of individuals who inflict suffering on animals.

Our Charter:

The BC SPCA Charter is the foundation that guides the work we do:

Whereas:

The world is inhabited by many species sharing a common ecosystem of air, earth, and water. We recognize and value our interconnectedness with all animals.

Therefore:

The BC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for the animals of the world we share.

We pledge our energies to inspire and mobilize society to create a world in which all animals, who depend on humans for their well-being, experience, as a minimum, five essential freedoms:

1. Freedom from hunger and thirst

2. Freedom from pain, injury, and disease

3. Freedom from distress

4. Freedom from discomfort

5. Freedom to express behaviours that promote well-being.
