My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Head Turner and Gentle Giant in one dog!

Meet Cornbread! Cornbread is fostered in Spokane, WA and can be transported to your area (see information below in “Adopting from Path of Hope Rescue” section). Because “Fur-st Impressions” are very important, schedule a meet and greet with Cornbread before applying to see if he is the perfect fit for your family by emailing us at Fur-stImpressions@pathofhoperescue.com.  A completed Adoption Application will be required after the meet and greet to move forward with Cornbread’s adoption.

Are you looking for a dog who is a head turner? A pup that will have people wondering what kind of exotic breed you’ve discovered? Look no further than Cornbread, a stunning 4-year-old male mixed breed with beautiful brindle coloring. With his floppy ears and goofy grin, Cornbread oozes charm. DNA test results on one of his siblings came back German Shepherd, Norwegian Elkhound, White Swiss Shepherd, Pit Bull Terrier, and boxer, which gives him a bit of a chameleon-like appearance. From different angles, he can look like any one of those breeds, but this gentle giant is one of a kind. Currently 109 lbs., our fosters are working on getting his weight down to a healthier 90 lbs. (Cornbread is not 100% on board with the idea of a diet, but he is doing his best!).

Cornbread’s perfect day would consist of a nap, cuddles with people, a walk (while not a marathoner, he does get excited about getting the chance to go for some outside adventures), and some play time with you (a silly boy, he is particularly fond of playing with his unicorn sloth stuffy). Cornbread enjoys playing with other dogs (he has been with dogs, big and small, in all his foster homes with us) and was well mannered with the resident cat. After some play, affectionate Cornbread enjoys tummy rubs, butt scratches, and cuddles with his humans. He may top 100 lbs., but he thinks he is a lap dog. Cornbread can take some time to warm up to new people, though once he decides you are part of the pack, he will be your friend for life. Cornbread was adopted as a puppy from our rescue and thrived in his home, but his adopters had to move in with extended family in CA when their situation in Washington changed. Cornbread was returned to us because he nipped a child out of excitement. He did not puncture skin or cause any injury other than bruising. Cornbread would do best with older children (10 and up) who will respect his boundaries.

Cornbread has plenty of skills in his repertoire. He is potty trained, crate trained, sleeps through the night, and cherishes his naps. Cornbread walks well on his leash and is learning to temper his excitement when encountering new dogs and people. He has his basic obedience commands down well (including kennel, which he knows means to go into his crate) and has good recall skills. Cornbread has allergies, which we are addressing with our proven allergy protocol, and may require a specialized food.

Cornbread’s ideal home? He’d love a relaxed, mellow home where he could chill, nap, and cuddle with humans. Walks make him so happy (and would help to keep him at a healthy weight) and romping time with well-balanced dog siblings would be a plus. People to love who would shower him with affection and attention would make this southern gentleman so happy. Older children would be best, and he would do fine with a cat. If this sounds like your home, reach out to us to set up your Fur-st Impression meeting with Cornbread!

Adopting from Path of Hope Rescue

  • Our adoption process sets us apart. We specialize in learning about you and your family to find just the right fit for you. Our Matchmakers are not only good at what they do; they will also guide you through the entire process.

  • Our Minimum Adoption Donation is $550 for puppies under a year and $450 for dogs one year and older. We are a WA state registered non-profit and rely heavily on adoption donations to cover the expenses associated with saving lives. Our dogs are spayed/neutered prior to adoption; microchipped with free lifetime registration; and up to date on DAPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines (when age appropriate) and deworming and heartworm treatment/prevention. Adopters can also earn a $100 training refund if they attend (6) hours of any in person training course.

  • Long Distance adopters (one hour or more from Spokane) may choose to travel to Spokane to pick up their dog or use our monthly transport option, Puppy Delivery Express, for an additional delivery donation of $250.  Puppy Delivery Express currently delivers dogs throughout Washington and to parts of Montana, Idaho, and Oregon.

About Path of Hope Rescue

  • At Path of Hope Rescue, our goal is to make EVERY DOG. WANTED. Our two employees and army of volunteers focus on transporting pregnant dogs and puppies from Texas, the number one kill state in America. The dogs we rescue are in poor living conditions and on euthanasia lists in shelters that are inundated with unwanted animals. We want to give these dogs a chance and bring them to the Pacific Northwest to find adoptive, loving homes.

  • We are 100% foster based; our dogs are fostered in loving homes where they are house and crate trained and learn basic obedience and leash skills. Dogs experience socialization opportunities with people, places, and other animals, and they receive the attention required to become well-rounded, healthy, and affectionate dogs that they would not otherwise receive in a shelter environment.

  • Our commitment does not end when the dog is adopted. Path of Hope offers post adoption owner support including information on making the dog’s transition to your home a smooth one; recommendations for Preferred Trainers; advice on pet behavior and wellness topics; Facebook litter groups to keep in touch with fellow adopters; and invitations to local rescue hosted events.
